President's Message
Hello friends,
I write today to share our news and updates as we approach the end of a remarkable year. The Institute has continued to deliver outstanding education experiences and led important science partnerships. We've invested in the future by attracting outstanding new staff to carry the Institute forward into Acadia's second century, while making stronger contributions to science and learning locally, regionally, and nationally.
Many of our subscribers contribute to make our work possible - and we thank you sincerely for your gifts of support.
I also write today to ask and encourage every other recipient of this newsletter to consider a contribution. It takes only a few seconds to make a gift.
It has never been more urgent to invest more in the effort to increase appreciation for science, evidence, and the natural world. To hear directly from teachers about the importance of this work, see the snowpack project video linked below. If, like me, you believe Schoodic Institute can make important contributions to this effort, please join us now.
Sincerely,

Schoodic Education Adventure Program Concludes for the 2016 Season
The Schoodic Education Adventure (SEA) program has concluded for the season. Curriculum-based and hands-on field experiences, led by Acadia National Park educators, offered an unparalleled experience for students to build science literacy and enthusiasm.
Above, Hebron (Maine) Station 5th & 6th grade students spent three days studying Acadia National Park as part of the SEA program. Selected areas of study included marine ecology, weather, and mapping. A special thank you to parents, teachers and the Acadia National Park team for another inspiring season.

Chickadees Lead 2016 Bird-Banding Effort
Visitors to Schoodic Point this fall, if attuned to bird sounds, were greeted by the familiar calls of two of our most recognizable birds. “Chick-a-dee-dee-dee” and “Yank – yank - yank”-- the respective calls of the Black-capped Chickadee and Red-breasted Nuthatch. Hardly a minute of silence would pass before one or the other or both of these species would sound off, giving away their locations amidst the bordering trees. The nasal-voiced nuthatch was found near the tops of the green, spire-pointed spruce trees, while the chickadee was found generally lower down, from mid-canopy to the ground. These different foraging locations apparently point to a disparity in the number of each species caught in our three-meter high bird-banding mist-nets. Black-capped Chickadees - the lower-foraging, insect-seeking species - were captured at a rate 5 times greater than the higher foraging, cone-seeking Red-breasted Nuthatch. A list of the top ten species captured is HERE.
