Team Sylvester Manor Takes the Plunge to Support Library

Sylvester Manor fielded a team of 25 intrepid plungers at the 7th Annual Turkey Plunge. On November 26, these fearless competitors charged into the water at Crescent Beach with Windmill Field vegetables in hand! They were awarded the honor of Most Money Raised by a Team.

Team Sylvester Manor collected over $2,300 to support Shelter Island Public Library, a frequent, much appreciated program partner, and the achievement by the Team and its many supporters will be memorialized with an engraved brick on the lower level patio of the Library.

Thank you to everyone who plunged or sponsored Team Sylvester Manor!

Tree Walk Highlights Significant Manor Trees

On October 30, the Shelter Island Friends of Trees hosted a well-attended wwalk through the core of the Manor property. Led by Tim Purtell, the walk also featured commentary by naturalist MaryLaura Lamont. The duo highlighted and documented significant cultural and native trees.

Future Tree Walks, both self-guided and with Manor tree experts, are in the works.

Bartlett Tree Experts Prepare Historic Manor Boxwoods for Winter
Thank you to Bartlett Tree Experts of Southampton, and Patricia Piotrowski in particular, for contributing their expertise, time, and hard work to care for the Manor's historic boxwoods, purportedly the oldest in America! Their crew labored long and hard this fall (in horrible weather!) to get the shrubs winter-ready. Watch for a more detailed account of these storied plants and how Bartlett is working to ensure their survival in our January newsletter.

Recognizing Miss Rose

We want to thank Mrs. Roswitha Wissemann, known to several generations of islanders as "Miss Rose"  or "Rosie," for her sincere dedication and service to Sylvester Manor and many other community organizations and activities. Miss Rose retired from her position as steward of the Manor House after 42 years, and we are all truly grateful for all of her contributions.

Miss Rose, pictured here with Shelter Island Town Supervisor James Dougherty, received a proclamation honoring her service at a packed Town Hall meeting on October 28.

Thank you, Miss Rose!

Mysteries of the Manor Memories

Mysteries of the Manor had record breaking attendance and costumes galore - from kids to canines. This year's Halloween happening was a little less on "the scary" and a lot more on the family fun. Hayrides, crafts, face painting, potato sack races, food, and games were just a few of the ways people came to enjoy the festivities at the Manor. Thanks to all for getting into the spirit of the season with us!

Welcome back, Jocelyn!
We're thrilled that Jocelyn Craig has returned to Sylvester Manor as our 2017 Windmill Field Manager on November 1. She's eager to further hone her farm experience as well continue continue to build relationships in the community, eating and sharing good food.

Food, family and friends have always been at the top of Jocelyn’s set of values. Part of her youth included frequent visits to Goshen, CT, where her uncles then operated an organic vegetable farm on her grandparents’ property. Fond memories of these visits combined with a love for cooking, Thanksgiving, tending a garden, potluck-gatherings, and participating in a CSA led to Jocelyn to intentional immersion in farm culture four years ago.

She spent two years apprenticing (one at Sylvester Manor), one as the Farm Stand Coordinator here at the Manor, and recently completed her role as Assistant Farm Manager at Upper Pond Farm in Lyme, CT.

Message from the Windmill Field

Upon my return to Sylvester Manor on November 1, I had the privilege of working alongside Andrew, Manisha, Ty, and Eliza. Without a doubt, their can-do attitudes and combined skills really shaped the end of the growing season here on the farm.

While I have witnessed teary-eyed good-byes, I also sensed excitement for their next adventures. Eliza set out for a trip to Europe. Ty moved to Seattle. Manisha will be spend the next couple of months at a farm in Vermont where she will experience snow for the first time! And, I am happy  to announce that Andrew will be farming with us again next year!

During December, our focus shifts to planning and preparations for the 2017 growing season . . . and beyond!

Sharing Lunch and Laughter with Shelter Island Students

It is always uplifting to spend time with everyone at Shelter Island School. Last month's luncheon was no exception. As Windmill Field Manager Jocelyn Craig expressed, "I think the cafeteria staff gets more excited about the vegetables than the kids do. Our team reminds everyone that the choices are there, and then farm-grown food is not a completely foreign thing."

Andrew Porzio, Windmill Field Resource Coordinator, agreed. "I love that we get to share our food with the children in our community; teaching all the kids about our animals and our vegetables is really important to me. They are all so excited to visit the farm!"

Sylvester Manor Fall Lamb Sale
We are excited to offer whole and half lambs for sale. Only a few remain, so please reserve yours today.

Sylvester Manor lambs are a breed called North Country Cheviot. They produce excellent quality meat and thrive on pastures that are a work in-progress. Part of our backfield reclamation project, the lambs
are essential to pasture development here at Sylvester Manor. They help keep our land in agricultural use while managing the species composition of the pasture.

Lamb is available as follows:

Half Lamb:      $300.00
Whole Lamb:   $550.00

All lambs are processed into standard cuts, vacuum sealed in clear plastic freezer wrap, and then labeled with the name of the cut and weight. A whole lamb weighs approximately 40-45 pounds, and
a half lamb is about 17-20 pounds.

If you are interested in supporting Sylvester Manor with your purchase of lamb, please email me at aporzio@sylvestermanor.org.
Reservations are on a first come first serve basis. When we are sold out, we are sold out.  I will send you a confirmation email to let you know that your purchase is secured.

Please keep in mind that these shares are easily split with friends or family and are an excellent way to eat locally, sustainably produced meat.

Thank you and Happy Holidays -

Andrew Porzio
Windmill Field Resource Coordinator

All Welcome at Final Gleaning
Saturday, December 10      10am-12pm

Join us in the Windmill Field this Saturday for the final gleaning of 2016. (Gleaning is the process of gathering leftover produce from the fields when harvest season is over.)

Please bring a knife (steak knife will do) or clippers if you have them, and a bag/basket for your produce. Remember to dress appropriately since it may be chilly.

We encourage everyone who attends to take home as much produce as they can use at no cost. Spread the word!
