CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER
Dear reader,

The end of the year has come and we are looking back to twelve months of sunshine but also of some shadows.

In 2016, we created three new Community Gardens as well as two School Gardens. Moreover, we enhanced the Agricultural Greenhouses Project and the Small Family Farms Project.

We are overly grateful to work with our dedicated project participants and our team, who continue to bring great commitment and enthusiasm to the gardens.

Besides the successes we are so pleased with, we felt the impacts of the economic and politic crisis in Brazil. It has been increasingly difficult to get support by the companies located in Brazil this year.

In this context, we are even more grateful to our supporters and sponsors. You really helped us surviving the difficulties that we have been and unfortunately still are facing.

We invite you to accompany and support our activities in 2017. It is with your help that we can give people a perspective and improve the nutritional situation of so many children and adults.

I would like to wish you merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Yours sincerely

Personal Christmas wishes from CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER projects

Before we even put together this newsletter, various project participants approached us and asked whether they would have the opportunity to report on their projects and to wish you a merry Christmas, since it is also thanks to your support that their projects are doing so well. We are pleased to pass on their Christmas wishes to you.

"This year, my brother, José Aparecido Cândido Viera, was diagnosed with cancer. This was a shock for all of us. In order for him to be able to focus fully on his health and wellbeing, my niece Adriana and my mother Catarina helped out in our garden. I also do as much as I possibly can do, in addition to working in my profession as a hospital nurse.

In these hard times, the hands-on work and support CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER gave us was a real gift. We owe much to the CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER team, they are always staying on our side. And we would also like to thank you, who support CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER's work financially, from the bottom of hearts.

I wish you a merry Christmas. Health, peace and joy for you and your families."

Give Christmas joy to more urban farmers and invest in the future of the Community Gardens Project.

Ryan Azevedo Giampietro (7) – pupil

"My name is Ryan. I'm a second year student. On the photo, which my grandmother Florisbela de Azevedo Silva took for you, you can see what I look like. My grandma Bela is an urban community gardener. Her garden is beautiful. I love being there, looking at the plants and playing with the chicken. From time to time I also lend a hand and help her with the harvest. Whenever we are in the garden, grandma Bela gives us salad, vegetables or fruit. This is when our dinners are particularly tasty.

I would love to have a School Garden, because at my school, we only have always rice and beans for lunch. Perhaps you can help us with that?

I wish you a merry Christmas. In Portuguese, you say Feliz Natal!"

Please help fulfill Ryan's Christmas wish. The head of school and the teachers of Ryan's primary school wish for a school garden just as much as the pupils, because public schools have only 0.32 Cents per child and meal at their disposition for the purchase of fruit and vegetables. Every donation helps.

Agricultural Greenhouses Project
Andréia Fernandes de Freitas
Agricultural Greenhouses Project, Suzano/SP

"In the middle of March and May 2016, Suzano and the surrounding area suffered from heavy storms and rainfall – so badly that some people lost their lives.

We were and we are endlessly grateful that it did not affect us. In contrast to many neighbors’ and friends' harvest, ours was not destroyed by the weather thanks to the agricultural greenhouses we were able to build with the help of CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER.

Please help CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER build more greenhouses in the region of Suzano in order to ensure other farmers harvests, even if our region is hit by severe weather. This is my Christmas wish. I would like to thank you and your families for your help and support. Merry Christmas!"

Support us in creating more agricultural greenhouses, applying the CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER's cost-efficient technology for building them using alternative materials. This is how more families can secure their livelihood – independent of the climatic circumstances.

"On last year's Christmas, my wife Paula told you about our struggles in 2015. Now we are happy to tell you that our hopes for 2016 have become reality.

Taking part in CITIES WITHOUT HUNGER's Small Family Farms Project really changed our situation to the better.

After Paula had stopped working with tobacco plants and now that we don't use agrochemicals anymore, Paula's health has improved tremendously. Our organic products are very successful, people like them a lot. We had never thought that the demand would be that big in our region, especially because in the beginning, many people did not understand why we switched to organic farming methods.

My specials thanks goes to you for supporting our way right from the beginning. This is nothing to be taken for granted, because you only know us from our reports. I wish you and your families a peaceful Christmas and a very happy new year – also in the name of my wife Paula."

In order for us to be able to help more farmers leave behind tobacco monoculture and train them in a new agricultural practice based on mixed culture, we need your support. Please help us.
