A TUNE FOR YOU
AULD LANG SYNE

According to Wikipedia, Robert Burns sent a copy of the original Auld Lang Syne to the Scots Musical Museum with the remark, "The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man." The melody in the recording and in the notation shown below is unlikely to be the same as the one Burns paired with the lyrics, but it is the melody sung now on New Year's Eve around the world. The link from the image above takes you to a lovely version.
Click here for the contemporary English lyrics and the contemporary melody.

Teaches at Meadowood: Tue, Wed, Thu & Fri
Judy has played violin virtually all of her life, beginning at age five and playing in her Elementary and High School orchestras. Throughout High School, she performed as a member of the Philadelphia All City Orchestra and, with some members of that group, also performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
During her time as a Music Education student at Temple University, she played with the University Orchestra under Jonathan Sternberg at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Judy also played with “The Hawaiians” at The Academy of Music and with a group specializing in Renaissance/early classical music. She now performs locally as a violinist (solo and in ensembles such as The Sunday Sinfonia and Berks Sinfonietta), as a fiddler and singer with Crow Hill.
Before joining Meadowood, Judy studied classical violin for seventeen years under masters Alma Grafe (student of Fritz Kreisler), Edgar Ortenberg (Budapest String Quartet) and Julian Meyer (Temple University). Judy studied piano for 6 years. Her studies are not all in the past...

LEO FENDER'S BEST WORK
Leo Fender was born Clarence Leonidas Fender on August 10, 1909 near Fullerton, California. By the time he was thirteen, fascinated by a radio his uncle had built from spare parts, Leo began repairing radios out of his parents' home. Even though he went to college for accounting, he continued to learn about electronics on his own.
After college he took a job as a

delivery man for Consolidated Ice and Cold Storage Company and eventually became their bookkeeper. He continued working with radios and electronics.
Big Bands were popular and musicians in them needed amplification. One band approached Leo to design and build a PA system. He ended up building several such systems. Around the same time, he met and married his first wife and, bounced around by the depression, took a series of accounting jobs.

WHY WE HUMIDIFY WOODEN INSTRUMENTS
WINTER'S COLD, DRY AIR TAKES ITS TOLL ON STRINGED INSTRUMENTS
|
|
|
GUITAR WITH CENTER SEAM CRACK
|
|
VIOLA WITH F-HOLE CRACK
|
|
The cracks in the guitar and viola pictured above were avoidable. Since lack of humidity caused both cracks, humidification could have prevented them.
The long-and-short of it is that you should do SOMETHING to maintain humidity at 40% or above so that you don't end up with a cracked instrument. In SE Pennsylvania, we normally need to humidify from November first through the middle or end of April. We encourage you to spend a little time and money on maintaining humidity so that you don't have to spend a lot on repairs.
For more information on WHY cracking happens, click here.
