SWAN Transport

SWAN Volunteer Transport Scheme is a project run by SWAN Advice Network. The transport has been operating since January 2001 and the charity’s main office is based in Radstock. SWAN Transport assists residents in Bath & North East Somerset who are elderly, disabled and on low income (with savings of under £16,000).

Types of Journey catered for

The scheme promotes social inclusion by providing transport to Social Services clients and self-referring elderly, isolated and disabled people on low income in Bath & North East Somerset.  It enables people to participate in social, recreational and community opportunities and helps people remain independent.
The scheme also operates an Access to Health project to help people access the hospitals in the B&NES area as well as health surgeries, dentists and opticians.  Each journey has a suggested donation to cover mileage and project administration.

Driver Information

The scheme recruits volunteer drivers living across the county who are paid mileage expenses for the use of their own vehicle. Support and training is provided by SWAN and is ongoing.

The drivers are matched with individual clients and their primary role is driving, although they are able to offer some basic support.  The service however does not include lifting and handling.

Have your say on gluten-free and over-the-counter prescribing

Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (BaNES CCG) has launched a four week period of public engagement on proposed changes to its prescribing policy.

The CCG, like other NHS organisations, must review every service it commissions to ensure NHS funds are being used appropriately and shared equitably across the whole local population. Bath and North East Somerset, in common with other parts of the UK, has a growing and ageing population which is causing a significant increase in demand for all types of local health and care services.  This means that health and care budgets are being stretched further.

The CCG has been reviewing treatments that are shown to be less clinically effective, provide insufficient health benefits and those that do not represent good value for money.   As a result there are two proposed changes to the local prescribing policy:

  • To stop prescriptions of gluten-free products for people with coeliac disease.  The NHS has been prescribing gluten-free food for over thirty years but does not provide food on prescription for other groups of patients living with other conditions associated with, or affected by, the type of food they eat.  Also, there is now a much wider range of reasonably priced gluten-free alternatives available in supermarkets.
  • To stop prescriptions for two groups of over-the-counter medicines – painkillers and antihistamines – when they are used for short-term, minor ailments such as mild hayfever, headache, coughs and colds.  Paracetamol and other painkillers cost around 1p per tablet in supermarkets and chemists compared to 3p per tablet on the NHS.  In addition, a significant proportion of GP appointments, GP practice and community pharmacy time is taken up in processing prescriptions for minor ailments which can be managed by patients or their carers without the need for prescription medicines.
Dr Ruth Grabham, local GP and Medical Director at the CCG said:

“Last year the CCG spent nearly £500k on painkillers and antihistamines and £112K on gluten-free products.  We believe this money should be used to commission other services which would be of greater benefit for more patients.

“We appreciate that not everyone will support these proposals. However they will not impact on the quality of clinical care patients receive.  We need to make best use of our limited resources and this includes asking people to take as much responsibility for their health as they can.”

To feed back on the plans, go online and complete the gluten-free and over-the-counter surveys, email banes.comms@nhs.net with your comments or call 01225 831 853 to request the surveys to be sent to you.

Full Business Case Published

NHS Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Bath & North East Somerset Council have unveiled our Full Business Case for the future of community health and social care services.

The document marks the culmination of almost two years of extensive engagement with thousands of local people and professionals to understand the strengths of current services and identify their priorities for improvement.

The Full Business Case will be presented to the CCG Board and the Full Council at public meetings on Thursday 10 November, seeking their approval to award a seven year ‘prime provider’ contract to Virgin Care to coordinate over 200 health and care services in people’s homes and communities.

A prime provider has overall responsibility for the delivery of services but will also subcontract some services to other organisations and charities with specialist skills to provide high quality and compassionate care for those in need.

The CCG and the Council have followed strict procurement regulations to identify the best possible organisation to deliver the community’s priorities.

A rigorous process of testing and evaluation involving service users, carers and subject matter experts led to Virgin Care being selected as the preferred bidder for the contract in August 2016.

Some of the reasons for selecting Virgin Care include:

•   Excellent track record of transforming services across the country.
•   Putting prevention first, supporting people to stay healthy and independent.
•   Strong focus on collaboration with GP practices, hospitals and local charities.
•   Cutting edge technology to bring health and care records into one place.
•   Innovative approaches for supporting and motivating the local workforce.

Dr Ian Orpen, a local GP and Clinical Chair of the CCG said:

“Our engagement with the local community demonstrated we have a wealth of community organisations in B&NES like Age UK and the Village Agents doing excellent work to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population.

“Appointing Virgin Care as a prime provider will not replace these organisations. It will make their job easier by giving them access to additional resources and technology to help them work together more effectively and deliver better outcomes for local people.”

Cllr Vic Pritchard, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health at the Council added:

“Bath and North East Somerset has long been a national leader in joining up NHS and Council services to provide high quality and compassionate care for local people.  However, the rising demand from our ageing population means our current model is no longer sustainable and we must change the way we deliver services.”

“We have followed a very robust process in line with Government guidelines and we are confident that Virgin Care is the best organisation to deliver the improvements that local people have asked us for.”

Jayne Pye receives a range of support from community services to support her with a long term neurological condition. She is one of 20 community champions who received training to score bids in the procurement process. Jayne said:

“This has been a very thorough process and local people like me have been involved all the way through from the very start.  I have a particular interest in reablement and rehabilitation so I’ve been really impressed with Virgin Care’s proposals to focus on prevention and supporting people to maintain their independence for as long as possible.”

Sonia Hutchison, Chief Executive of the Bath and North East Somerset Carers’ Centre said:

“The Carers’ Centre has worked hard to make sure carers’ needs have been thought about throughout this process and we are really pleased that several carers were involved in the decision-making as community champions.

“We are looking forward to continuing our work ensuring carers are listened to, recognised and supported in the vital role they play in all community health and social care services.”

Message from
West of England Joint Planning

Have your say on the West of England Joint Spatial Plan and Joint Transport Study
The four West of England councils would like your involvement in the next steps towards drawing up plans which will steer development in our area over the next 20 years.

We are writing to you as you have previously commented on the JSP/JTS and/or expressed an interest in local plan preparation and local transport study work. We therefore believe you may be interested in taking part in this new consultation.

Last year we started a consultation process to gain people’s thoughts and ideas to help set the approach and priorities. Comments and ideas were received from the public, local organisations, businesses and transport providers and users. Having taken on board the consultation feedback, the next phase of the process is to consult again, this time on outline proposals.

You can view the consultation documents and make comments at www.jointplanningwofe.org.uk. Documents are available in local libraries and council offices throughout Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Please do take the opportunity to use our online system to respond as this ensures that your comments will be dealt with in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

A series of information events will be taking place across the four Council areas, details of which are published at www.jointplanningwofe.org.uk. These will provide the opportunity to view the material about the latest ideas.

Please let us have your views no later than Monday 19th December 2016.

If you have any questions please email: comment@jointplanningwofe.org.uk

Further information is also available at: www.jointplanningwofe.org.uk

Please note that responses received, including personal details, cannot be kept confidential. From time to time we may contact you to seek your views about other planning consultations and projects; if you would not like this contact then please let us know. Similarly if you would like us to completely remove your details from our databases then please let us know.
Food Drop Launch

Food Drop is a new student run volunteer project launching this academic year as part of the Student Union’s student volunteer group called V Team. Food Drop is passionate about the redistribution of surplus food, by providing a student courier service that delivers unwanted food to local charities in need. Students from the University will ‘drop’ food from the Pret a Manger store located in Southgate, to three different charities in Bath once a week. The charities support young people with drug and alcohol misuse problems and families experiencing domestic violence. Food drop would assist these charities in providing a safe place with the comfort of knowing food is available to them and their children.

Student Miranda Emma Khamis, the leader of this project said "it is estimated around 10 million tonnes of fresh produce is wasted per year, despite large cities like London having an estimated 400,000 people experience food poverty per year.  On hearing that unsold food is thrown out every day at local coffee shops in Bath, and knowing so many people suffer food poverty, I wanted to find out how these two issues might be resolved. Therefore I contacted the Pret a Manger Head Office, as I was aware they were one of the first big companies to donate all their unsold food in London to local homeless charities; I wanted to know how they went about this to see if it was possible in Bath.

I ended up getting into an in depth conversation about food redistribution with Pret a Manger’s Foundation Manager. She explained that the problem they faced in many small cities like Bath is that there is no one to deliver the unsold food to those in need. This prompted me to develop the idea of Food Drop, a simple solution to this long-standing problem of food redistribution.

This has been made possible thanks to the donation of food by Pret a Manger, and the ‘O2 Think Big’ funding of £300, though hopefully we will gain more funding for a future event which would raise the profile of the project. I have high hopes for this project, but I am open to any ideas that may improve it. Feel free to contact me with these ideas or questions you may have at mk725@bath.ac.uk".

Cold weather alert

The Cold weather health watch comprises four levels of response based on cold weather thresholds. The thresholds have been developed to trigger an alert when severe cold weather is likely to significantly affect people's health. The alerts take account of temperature along with other winter weather threats such as ice and snow.  Go to Met Office website.

A Cold weather health watch system operates in England from the 1 November to 31 March every year, in association with Public Health England.

We have opened a brand new pop-up shop on Midsomer Norton High Street in collaboration with Somer Valley Rotary Club, where you can drop items off and do some Christmas shopping while you're here.

Since opening our very successful Hub in Midsomer Norton last year, we’ve had a huge welcome from the town, and the money raised from the pop-up shop will be used to support vulnerable older people within the local community.

Our doors will be open at 89 High Street from 10am - 4pm every Saturday until Christmas, and also on Friday 2nd December (staying open until 7pm for the Christmas Fair), Friday 9th December and Friday 16th December. Come and say hello!

3 Café & Kitchen at Three Ways School

The “3 Café & Kitchen” is nearly there, but we still need your help to finish!
As the plasterers and decorators move in, community support is still needed!  Three Ways School is nearing the completion of six years hard fundraising and needs Bath’s support to open the doors in early 2017.

The dream of having an on-site work skills centre at Three Ways Special School is becoming a reality. The aim of the centre is to develop employability skills for young people with a range of disabilities and give real-life experience in a café and shop which will be open to the public. Over £400,000 has been raised to build the centre over the last six years and the final few months of building work is happening.

There is a challenge ahead before opening the café and shop as there is a large outside area which is currently rubble. The vision is to have a beautiful decked area with seating which would double the number of spaces to be available at the café. The centre also is yet to find funding for:
  • Furniture
  • Catering equipment, including Teacups, plates and cutlery.
  • Materials to complete the outdoor areas
Julie Dyer, Head Teacher at Three Ways says ‘It is so exciting to see the skills centre and café nearing completion. It would be wonderful to have help to finish and open in the New Year. If there is a team out there willing to give up time to come and help to deck the outside area, anyone able to donate furnishing or decking or able to make a donation to help towards these it will help us along another step towards our goal.’

Emily Danquah a Parent at Three Ways School says ‘The opportunities our children are going to have through the centre are amazing. To get recognised catering and customer service qualifications and the experience of working in a café and shop will be wonderful. This will help our children to become one step closer to supporting themselves and being as independent as possible.’

The building of the centre is now finished and the interior is due to be completed by mid-December 2016. The centre is light and airy and will be a welcoming café offering wonderfully tasty fresh food.  Students will work to prepare and serve customers with support of specialist staff.  Three Ways School want to give all pupils the chance to reach their aspirations.

Jo Stoaling, Deputy Head says ‘We want all students to be able to support themselves and to live as independently as possible. We want to provide the support and guidance for young people with special needs to gain qualifications and experience to go on to college or to a supported work employment. Our young people are keen to be an important, reliable part of our local work force.’

If you are able to support or donate to Three Ways in the final stages of development of the Work Skills Centre please contact Lucy Beattie or Amelia Hartley on 01225 838070 or amelia.hartley@threeways.co.uk

Next year in 2017 we celebrate the 100th year of the charity

We are organising a Centenary event Leonard Cheshire Disability, in aid of Greenhill House, Timsbury, Bath

A charity masquerade ball to commemorate the birth of Leonard Cheshire on 7th September 1917. Raising awareness of the presence and work Leonard Cheshire Disability does locally supporting disabled people.
The theme will be sport, because we want to celebrate our sporting successes and draw inspiration from Paralympic sport and Invictus games athletes (who apparently warm up by playing boccia - a sport close to our hearts).  The event will have guest speakers from Help for Heroes and Paralympic athletes highlighting the value of sport in recovery and its psychological benefits.

It will be held on Saturday 23rd of September 2017 next year at Bath Assembly Rooms , Bath.
Starting with a welcome and drinks reception in the Octagon. A 3 course dinner including wine, an auction led by Martin Roberts from ITV : ‘homes under the hammer’. Items will include a VIP day for 4 at RAF Conningsbury, with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight provided by the RAF. There will also be an opportunity for guests to take part in a Boccia challenge  to help raise funds.

We want to raise £30,000 to extend the sporting activity offered at the home. The aim is to install a full sized Boccia court for the team to train and develop their competition skills. Currently the team play once a month at Bath University Sports Training Village using the Boccia mats facility and our own adapted equipment funded by Comic Relief.  In December last year our players were coached by GB Boccia player Nigel Murray at Bath University, Nigel who competed at the Rio Paralympic Games will be one of the speakers at this event and will lead the boccia challenge fundraiser. Jason Gardener Olympian will also support the evening.

Tickets will be priced accordingly to reflect the costs involved to put on the event. Sponsorship is being sought with a number of packages to offer local businesses.

This is a huge undertaking but a great opportunity to raise our profile locally and raise funds for the home. Attracting new supporters as well as appealing to existing ones too. If anyone knows any local companies or family members happy to publicise the event on their company website, Bath Bristol and beyond please let me know. Please note we are selling tables of ten £950 - seeking companies to buy a table!!
Does anyone want to volunteer to sell a table….then get in touch. Your help will as ever be greatly appreciated. I am leading on this any questions happy to discuss.

There will of course be national celebrations and we will figure within a variety of events around the country coinciding with the anniversary of Leonard Cheshire’s birth.
