Blepharitis
Topical 1% azithromycin plus 0.1% dexamethasone may be more effective than azithromycin alone for resolving symptoms of blepharitis, but does not appear more effective than dexamethasone alone (Clin Ophthalmol 2016 Aug 10)
Topical azithromycin appears as effective as oral doxycycline for improving subjective symptoms of chronic posterior blepharitis, but may not reduce objective findings (such as ocular surface staining and meibomian gland plugging) as effectively (Int J Ophthalmol 2016 Jul 18)
Ophthalmology common clinical competency framework
A new Ophthalmology common clinical competency framework (CCCF) has been published by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists to provide standards of knowledge and skill required for non-medical eye healthcare professionals. The Framework covers four clinical areas: acute and emergency eye care, cataract assessment, glaucoma and medical retina.
Variation in cataract service provision
The Royal National Institute for the Blind has published Surgery deferred, sight denied: variation in cataract service provision across England three years on. This report highlights differences in waiting times for NHS cataract treatment across Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in 2015/16. The RNIB is calling for all CCGs to implement the Royal College of Ophthalmologists cataract commissioning guidance to ensure patients are given the best and most appropriate care, in a timely manner.
