The rOGUE Gallery is a 5 x 4 metre space within Eastern Edge dedicated to showcasing work by Eastern Edge members, with a special focus on local practices and works by artists with a connection to Newfoundland and Labrador. We accept applications for exhibitions, performances, concerts, events, screenings, lectures, interventions, art writing, and curatorial projects/group shows, and other forms of creative expression.
The rOGUE Gallery offers an honorarium of $200 for each exhibition selected by the Committee. rOGUE Gallery shows and projects run for two - six weeks.
There are two application deadlines per year:November 30thandMay 31st.

Claire Scherzinger: The Smurf, The Duck, The Devil, The Salesman

Claire Scherzinger presents a new exhibition of work that dissects her thoughts on what painting is and what it can become. Through a narrative of characters, the Smurf, the Duck, the Devil, the Salesman, she weaves a story central to the months she lived in London, ON and now in Toronto. The accumulation of details in this story is told through her many experiments in materiality in painting as well as constantly collecting junk, or found objects, to be integrated into her sculptural work.
This collection of work contemplates questions about painting and the politics of painting Scherzinger encountered while working as an artist assistant in London, ON and now as an artist in Toronto. The people who gave their answers to these questions have naturally provided their own biases and, along with Scherzinger’s own opinions of what a painting is and what it can be, has pieced together a fragmented identity of what it means to live constantly in flux with her work.

Claire Scherzinger is a visual artist and writer with a BFA in drawing and paintings and creative writing from OCAD University. In the span of her short career as an emerging artist she has shown her work across Canada with upcoming solo projects at the Art Gallery of Mississauga, the Varley Museum in Markham and the Forest City Artist Run Centre in London, ON. She has had her first poetry published internationally and was also a finalist this year for the RBC funded 17th National Painting Prize. She lives and works in Toronto.

Mimi Stockland: A Hill of Beans

A river carves its twisting way through the landscape, a sloping mountain is made gentle by time, oxygen turns the rusting shell of a car into red dust, an ocean of tea is drunk daily over the course of a lifetime; nothing exists without tiny, incremental, unrelenting repetition. Monotony is a requirement for creation/destruction. Our days are composed of the same gestures and actions, repeated in sequence and changing imperceptibly over time, either deliberately or unconsciously. Once accumulated, habits hold the shape of a life, just as cells hold the shape of a plant.
A crochet hook or hand-sewing needle repeats its motion hundreds of times with particular variations, manifesting individual shapes and pattern. This installation is a visual exploration of links between cellular biology, organic growth and decay through the particularly suited medium of textiles. As a case in point, the sum of the body of work is in itself the product of a sustained, repetitive daily practice.

Mimi Stockland is a multidisciplinary visual artist and performer based in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She obtained a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University in 2009. Mimi relocated from Montreal to Newfoundland in 2015 after obtaining a diploma in Textile Construction from the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, where she specialized in digitally-assisted machine-knitting. In addition to working in fibers, her practice extends to illustration, printmaking, performance and video. Her work is held in private collections across Canada and she has performed on stages in Canada and Europe.

SPARK BOX NATIONAL RESIDENCY AWARD + $1,000 DAWSON BURSARY
Imagine one full month to get a new project off the ground. One full month to think only about creating your work. One full month without distractions. This is what Spark Box Studio is offering to artists living and working in Canada: one full month at the Spark Box Studio Residency where you will be given a studio space and living space for FREE. In addition the selected artist will receive a $1,000 bursary which Spark Box Studio owners Chrissy and Kyle are offering in memory of their dear friend and artist Donald Dawson.
This residency opportunity is a unique way for established and emerging artists to cultivate new ideas, access a rich library of arts resources, and focus on their career.
Open to emerging, mid-career, or established Canadian artists. Open to visual artists, printmakers, photographers, performance artists, and filmmakers.
The summer of 2017 will be the 35th International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul, an event that Françoise Labbé introduced in 1982 as the Symposium international de la jeune peinture du Canada.
On this occasion, the 2017 edition will look at the question of history, presenting the many ways that artists have developed to examine the construction of history. With the decline of the avant-garde model, artists no longer see themselves as continuing the progress of history, but rather draw widely on its resources as well as that of objects, facts, ideas and models of the past.
Our era, moreover, stands out as having lost confidence in the historical perspective, being even disenchanted when faced with the actual future of humanity. During the 1980s, the emergence of technology and of digital tools linked these new production means to the future of society; however, today their use, always more widespread, reduces this promise to a momentary experience and an unrestrained acceleration of successive events.
In this context, contemporary art works produce, perform and represent history differently. Artists appropriate the past, reinterpret it and replay it in order to reinvent our manner of seeing and envisioning the future in a new way.

Fogo Island Arts and The Hnatyshyn Foundation are seeking applications from young Canadian curators for a six-week residency in 2017.
About the Residency
The Hnatyshyn Foundation-Fogo Island Arts Young Curator Residency provides an opportunity for an emerging Canadian curator between the ages of 25 and 30 to participate in a six-week residency with Fogo Island Arts.
The residency will cover the costs of travel to and from Fogo Island, accommodations in a traditional Newfoundland home and use of a vehicle for on-island transportation. The residency also includes a stipend to cover food costs and incidentals.
During the residency period, participants have opportunities to work and interact with Fogo Island Arts staff, Canadian and international artists-in-residence, and members of the community. Candidates are selected based on their body of work and their ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Raise Up Fundraising and Wicked Wool Socks is excited to be hosting the 2nd Annual Bless your Cotton Socks! Fundraiser and Sock Drive. What better way is there to celebrate the holidays than by helping out people in need in our community? Sure, nudding bah!
Socks are one of the most needed items by folks in shelters and for newcomers to our lovely province over the winter months, and they are donated the least. Why not knit up a storm and donate them to someone in need? Next time you're out grabbing those holiday stocking stuffers, pick up a pair of warm socks for someone special you don't know!

Mummers Festival 2016
The Mummers Festival runs November 26th to December 14th with events leading up to the Mummers Parade on Saturday, December 10th! Don’t just watch the Parade, be in it! Get yourself dressed up or come to our Rig Up an hour before the Parade to fashion yourself the perfect disguise. The Pot ‘n’ Pan Kitchen Jam teaches mummers some simple beats to play at the Parade. Show up an hour before the Parade for your free lesson.
The Parade ends at our Scuff ‘n’ Scoff party with live music, Purity syrup and sweets. You might want to stuff an extra pillow in your pants to stay warm! The event will feature live music with “Russells in the Corner” and a traditional dance lesson from the Mistress of Misrule! Expect lots of hard stompin’.
If you really want to spice up your disguise this year, the Festival is hosting three different workshops: make an ugly stick, build a hobby horse, or fashion yourself a ribbon rig costume.
Other events include “Exploring a Changing Tradition”, a presentation on the evolving nature of mummering; “Plankin’ ‘Er Down”, a talk about traditional dance in NL with a dance lesson included; “Mummers, Wrens, and Hobbies”: a talk about the Irish and NL connection to mummering; and “King of All Birds” a public forum about the wren tradition.
That’s 15 events between November 26th and December 14th for you to choose from! Get your mummer on!
