Deep South Challenge News - December 2016

In this issue we talk to the new Director, Dr Mike Williams, about his recent research in Antarctica and his vision for synergies within the Challenge and introduce you to Associate Professor Adrian McDonald, our new science leader for the Processes and Observations Programme.

We feature three research highlights from the Challenge, provide an update on the Earth System Model, which is central to the Challenge research, and present developments and opportunities in the Impacts and Implications and Engagement programmes.

We've also announced the next Contestable funding round, due in March 2017, and outline the process for a successful application

New Director, New Challenges

Shortly after taking the top job, Dr Mike Williams found himself at the bottom of the world in Antarctica. We asked him what attracted him to the Director's role, what he was up to on the icy continent and why it's important to the Deep South Challenge.

Research Highlights

Three Deep South Challenge science highlights about: successful airborne measurements of sea ice, preparation of data to inform the next IPCC report, and publication of a novel method that uses machine learning to classify satellite cloud data.

Contestable Funding Round 2017

The Deep South Challenge has now released the Request for Proposals (RfP) for the second round of contestable funding due 2 March 2017, and is calling for proposals that will serve the Challenge mission and meet its objectives.

Impacts and Implications Strategy: Dialogue Events

The Impacts and Implications programme is funding research that will help New Zealanders manage risk, adapt and thrive in a changing climate. This research will be developed Wilbur Townsend, from Motu outlines the year ahead.

The Deep South Challenge Processes & Observations Programme has a new science lead. Adrian McDonald, who is an Associate Professor at Canterbury University, will lead the Programme's breadth of projects.

New Zealand's Next Top Model

Central to the work of the Deep South Challenge is the first version of an Earth System Model that will better predict New Zealand's future climate. We asked Dr Olaf Morgenstern, who leads the modelling capability project, how the project was tracking and what this means for New Zealand decision making.
