The WIBRD Board have been flat out this month planning for 2017, we have some amazing events planned including to Influential Women in Business Awards in August. 2017 for Women in Business & Regional Development will be about supporting each other in business and celebrating influential Women and we invite you to be part of it. November Empowering Women in Business Breakfast
Thank you to all who came on Wednesday the 16th of November to our last Empowering Women in Business Breakfast for 2016 at the Main Corner. Anelia Blackie, Manager of the Mount Gambier Migrant Resource Centre was an inspiration to us all as she shared her insight into refugee settlement services within our region and in particular the "I Made It" sewing enterprise program she has started at the Migrant Resource Centre thanks to a grant by the Stand Like Stone Foundation. Many thanks to the City of Mount Gambier Council who once again hosted us and to the fabulous girls from Presto Eatery who provided our amazing breakfast.
 
Congratulations UFS Chemist
 Congratulations to UFS Chemist who are celebrating 100 years in business. UFS Chemist opened back in October 1916 and we they are still open 100 years later! One of the only locally run pharmacy’s in Mount Gambier, UFS Chemist are great supporters of Women in Business & Regional development and their Pharmacists/Manager Barbara Beal has been a very inspirational speaker at many of our events. UFS are celebrating this massive achievement with a number of sales so why not call in and check it out.
WIBRD Corporate Governance Training
The Board of Women in Business & Regional Development have this month been hard at work to ensure we remain a respected and viable network for the community and our valuable members. This work even includes training at 9am on a Sunday morning! Thanks to Bill DeGaris from DeGaris lawyers for running this valuable workshop and training for us.
5 Minutes with Caitlin Kennedy
This month we are talking to Caitlin Kennedy, previously a journalist for the Border Watch, Caitlin is about to start her new role as marketing and community relations coordinator for Country Arts SA based in Mount Gambier. Caitlin is one of our up and coming members and in 2017 will be taking on the role as Media Liaison for WIBRD to support us in our communications.
1. Who is Caitlin Kennedy?
I am 21, born and bred in Mount Gambier with my parents and two older siblings Brett and Alicia, along with a number of fluffy and cute animals over the years. I still live and work in Mount Gambier with my partner Sam.
2. Your main professional areas/jobs you have worked in over the years.
I began my working career in retail before accepting a job at the Border Watch newspaper group after I completed Year 12 as their receptionist. I completed a certificate in business admin, before becoming a journalist. After three years I have now moved onto a career with country arts SA and started on Monday.
3. What is the Biggest challenge you have faced in your career so far?
My biggest challenge I have faced professionally would be branching my network from a young age. I worked hard to meet new contacts and with the help of WIBRD have met a number of fantastic new people.
4. Your favourite place to visit in the Green Triangle area.
I love visiting the beaches in Robe during summer.
5. Recommendation for our members to focus on/ take away.
Always strive for more. Some people are scared to make changes whether it is professionally or personally, I say embrace it. There's always more to learn, more to do and more to see.

 2017 Wall CalendarA collaboration between Julia Reader & Bianca Richardson
WIBRD Member and Sole Sister Julia Reader along with her fellow Sole Sister Bianca Richardson have collaborated and developed a 2017 wall calendar, ‘Little Riches’! Featuring artwork by the talented local artists, the calendar is a month to a page and is a fantastic Christmas idea.
With part proceeds donated to the Stand Like Stone. The Calendars will be available for delivery from Mid November 2016.

After much consideration and member feedback from a survey of our network, Women in Business & Regional Development trialed our involvement in the ANZ Mortgage Introducer Program from March 2016 until October 2016. A decision has been made at our November Board meeting to continue with the program.
This opportunity by our Major Sponsor ANZ has enabled WIBRD to receive funding to the tune of $2,952 to support the sustainability of our network through a mortgage introducer program whereby WIBRD receive 0.3% on residential loans and 0.6% of commercial loans from ANZ when members and sponsors of WIBRD mention their association with Women in Business & Regional Development.
All money raised from this program from the trial period will go towards the SARWG Scholarship, a Sub Fund of the Stand Like Stone Foundation, that seeks to support women in the Limestone Coast to achieve their educational goals, and operational costs for the WIBRD network to ensure our sustainability and ability to offer our members cost effective training and events.
The WIBRD involvement in the program does not mean that we recommend the ANZ mortgage products over other mortgage products offered in the sector, and all people getting a loan are advised to perform their own due diligence in deciding what product is best for you or your business needs. All dealings with the ANZ Bank are kept confidential and are not passed on to WIBRD.
The decision to go ahead for a trial period for this program has been reliant upon the feedback received from our network and we thank all that have contributed to the WIBRD making the decision.

Housing for Women Survey
The South Australian Government is seeking to develop new types of housing assistance that respond to changes in our community. One of these changes is an increasing number of older women – especially older, single women needing affordable, safe, long-term housing.
One idea for new housing assistance is to make home ownership easier for older people with limited income and assets. There are several ways that this can happen including through “shared equity” products. Shared equity means that an individual buyer pays for a portion of a home (for example, between one-half and three-quarters of the total cost) with the remaining value contributed by another organisation that shares the ownership. This approach may reduce loan repayments and/or deposit requirements for the buyer. The share owned by the other organisation is repaid when the home is sold.
To better understand the type of assistance that is needed and the best help that can be provided, we are asking women to fill in this anonymous survey.
Responses are sought particularly from single women over 45, however women of all ages are invited to participate.

Announcing the opening of the Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Entrepreneurship (WISE) Programme - a key initiative of the National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA).
The WISE Programme is an $8 million competitive grant programme that will fund activities that support women in STEM, and eliminate barriers for women’s participation in STEM education and careers, including entrepreneurship. Funding will support outreach programmes that target girls and women and foster their interest in STEM studies and careers, including entrepreneurship; develop their innovation and entrepreneurial skills; and build their professional networks. The programme also provides funding to identify and celebrate STEM role models in science and research, entrepreneurship and corporate leadership to inspire school age girls.
Funding will support outreach projects that target girls and women to:
- foster their interest in entrepreneurship
- develop their innovation and entrepreneurial skills
- build their professional networks.
The programme will award grants from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $250,000.

'Supporting Each Other in Business' Lunches
The WIBRD ‘Supporting Each Other in Business’ Lunches will be held on the 4th or last Friday of every month.The informal lunches are open to all women and will be a set booking at a sponsors venue such as the Commodore and will provide a forum for those that attend to talk honestly about their business, develop professional relationships to work together to support each other, help each other through obstacles and mentor one another.In line with the newly developed strategic direction and action plan, WIBRD have organised this initiative to further support women in our region in all their endeavours and the lunches are a wonderful way to get out of the office meet some new people and have lunch!
Each member pays for their individual lunch and bookings are simply a text message at least a day prior to the lunch to the particular WIBRD Board Member hosting the lunch.
Please note there will be no lunch in December and the lunches will resume in 2017.
