China Filed Most Patents in 2015
WIPO recent issued a report indicating China continued to set the pace for patent applications last year, filing a record of over 1 million that nearly all focused on its giant home market. China accounted for about 1,100,000 patent applications last year. The USA and Japan each had about 500,000.
According to WIPO, the increase demonstrates the strong growth of intellectual property protection in China. China’s figures are especially high in comparison to the rest of the world, where patent application growth has been relatively slower.
Most of the Chinese applications were filed domestically, about 2/3 of the global total. In contrast USA companies and individuals filed the most patent applications outside their own country. WIPO said Chinese patents focused on computer technology, electrical machinery and digital communications sectors.
