Op 15 december vindt de 3e jaarlijkse Leiden Lecture on Ancient Arabian Civilization plaats, georganiseerd door Leiden Center for the Study of Ancient Arabia i.s.m. NINO en enkele andere organisaties.

The oasis of Tayma, Northwest Arabia – 6000 years of cultural contacts and exchange

Tayma was an important trading post on the trade routes leading from Southern Arabia to Syro-Mesopotamia and the Levant. It saw 6000 years of cultural contacts and exchange, from the 4th millennium BC, through the Babylonian period, to the expansion of islam.
The Saudi-German excavation of the oasis has shed unprecedented light on the cosmopolitan history of Tayma, and its importance for the history of pre-Islamic Arabia.

PD Dr. A. Hausleiter (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Berlin, Orient-Abteilung) is co-director of the Saudi-German multidisciplinary field project at the oasis of Tayma.

Recent archaeological and epigraphic missions to the Arabian Peninsula have revealed far-reaching cultural interactions between its inhabitants and the great civilizations of the Fertile Crescent. This workshop will gather prominent scholars on the epigraphy and archaeology of Arabia to put into perspective these interactions in an attempt to better integrate Arabia into the history of the Ancient Near East. Talks will focus on South Arabia, the Central Arabia ‘Arab tribes’, and the great oases of North Arabian, Taymā҆ and Dadān.
