1.Question Interview: Charlie Cobb - Athletic Director - Georgia State
LSU's latest statement on the Tom Herman-to-Baton Rouge-wait-maybe-not reports from last night, "Contrary to media reports, there has been no decision made on who will be the next football coach at LSU. Coach (Ed) Orgeron has done a great job of leading this team since taking over in late September and we are pulling hard for the Tigers tonight against Texas A&M. As we stated earlier, we are going to take our time and make sure we select the right person to lead our football program." (link); Watch: ESPN's Rutledge trekked from the sideline to the visiting AD box at Texas A&M last night & walked away with a, "No comment and nothing to say," from Tigers AD Alleva. (link); Statement from Houston AD Yurachek: "I have not been informed by Tom or his agent that they are in conversations with LSU. We are in Memphis together, preparing for a game." (link); Further, from the Houston Chronicle's Duarte: "Sources: UH AD Hunter Yurachek met with agent for Tom Herman this week, offered extension that includes seven-figure increase in total comp." (link); There were also reports out of Austin that Texas officials were headed to meet with Herman's representation last night, but also that HC Strong could still stick with a big win today over TCU. USF & UCF FB meet tomorrow in Tampa & both face some similar challenges in putting butts in seats. Ticket sales this season for the Bulls are up 42% year over year & there's an expectation for 30K to 35K to be in Raymond James Stadium to watch the rivalry game. AD Harlan: "You have to have constant focus on what you're trying to do because there is so much going on in these great cities and to capture attention can be difficult. But you also understand because we live in these great metropolitan cities that we have a lot of chances to attract people. You just have to be very creative in how you do it. For us at USF, it's a year-round approach." Knights AD White spent much of his early time in Orlando hiring a litany of new HCs, "We want to sell out that stadium on a consistent basis and we want to expand it. I think we can do those things. We now finally have an opportunity to get ahead of things." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
It may not be quite as populous as China (~1.35B people), but India is only smaller by a fraction (~1.25B) & the NBA is one sporting entity that believes the next generation of talent could come from the Republic. Next April the NBA will open an Academy in New Delhi & select 24 of the most talented 14 to 18 year olds to receive full scale training & development tutoring from pro coaches. It's the fifth such Academy in the world, with three in China & one in Australia. (link)

The Apple Cup will go down today in Pullman as the winner of Washington State-Washington stakes its claim as the North division champ & earns a trip to the Pac-12 title game. Cougars AD Moos: "It's huge, it's a great rivalry. It's grown into an even better one this year because all the marbles are at stake." Former WSU quarterback Gesser pretty direct, "All you do is just hate the other side. You hate anybody that wears purple, anybody that talks about it." Kickoff set for 3:30 EST on Fox. (link)
For the sixth straight year, Iowa & Nebraska will meet on the gridiron on Friday, a spot previously occupied by Colorado opposite the Cornhuskers back in its Big 12 days. Hawks AD Barta likes how the rivalry has worked out, "It’s been a wonderful opportunity for us. You have two really strong football traditions and athletic brands. ... We’ve gotten good feedback. No complaints. I think it’s been well received in the state and across the country." Though UI hasn't sold out the match-up yet, Barta believes, "It may have taken a few years to work into people’s schedules," a slim 500 tickets remained for today's kick in Iowa City. (link)
Middle Tennessee State AD Massaro knows his Blue Raiders are going bowling, but the final destination isn't quite clear yet. "I hope our fan base can plan and make it to a bowl game and encourage them to start getting prepared." Conference USA could come up short in having enough teams qualify for its six tie-ins. North Texas, Southern Miss & UTSA all need one more win to punch their tickets. (link)
NextVR continues to tweak its production process for NBA games that are being offered in virtual reality. Seven camera angles were used in a recent game between the Knicks & Trail Blazers & the coordination of which angle to use in particular situations is still being honed by crews weaving the action together. NBA VP of Global Media Distribution Marsilio indicates 25 or more tips could be done in VR this season & every single match-up within a couple of years. (link)
Some of you may be standing in a Black Friday line as you're reading this email, which means you chose brick & mortar over eCommerce (or the deal was better that way) & Target CEO Cornell says it's imperative to structure the best customer experience on both fronts to capture purchases. "We have to make it really easy for the customer. They can’t compete with each other. Those days are going to fade away." Sales numbers from yesterday were trending as one of the company's biggest days ever, but 94% of purchases are still made in-store for Target. (link)
International executive coach & management scholar Kets de Vries for HBR, "Do You Hate Your Boss?" Some strategies: 1) Practice Empathy ("The first step is to consider the external pressures your manager is under. Remember, most bad bosses are not inherently bad people; they're good people with weaknesses that can be exacerbated by the pressure to lead and deliver results."); 2) Consider Your Role ("...people who struggle to work well with their bosses are nearly always a part of the problem themselves: Their behavior is in some way preventing them from being recognized and valued."); 3) Offer a Chance to Change ("If you conclude you're not the one derailing the relationship with your boss, only then should you openly suggest that the two of you don't seem to interact well and that you'd like to remedy the situation."); 4) Organize a Mutiny ("If you can't improve things by changing your behavior or opening lines of communication with your boss, and if your colleagues feel the same way you do, you should consider alerting HR and the boss's bosses to the problem. [...] Lodging an official complaint is definitely a last resort.") and, 5) Play for Time or Move On ("But remember, in playing for time, you also need to set a time limit, so that hanging in doesn't become a way of life."). Lots more. (link)
Good read from The Chronicle of Higher Education on President-elect Trump's selection of Betsy DeVos as the next Secretary of Education. "Ms. DeVos’s lack of a track record in higher education is by no means unusual. Several Department of Education leaders — including Arne Duncan, President Obama’s choice for the post, and the late Shirley M. Hufstedler, who became the first education secretary under President Jimmy Carter — had no professional experience in the sector." University of North Carolina System Prez Spellings calls DeVos a friend & notes she has "put her money where her mouth is" in previous education-related endeavors & points to the need for a focus on "streamlining pathways from secondary to postsecondary education and supporting community colleges." Former Michigan Governor Engler: "I think Betsy will be very strong in that area. She’s not going to be imposing litmus tests on higher education." Naturally, there has also been some pushback on the selection of DeVos. Former Michigan State Dean of the College of Education Heller: "She may push for federal funding that would make its way more toward private and religious institutions at the expense of public institutions." More. (link)
As Purdue hones in on its next FB HC, The Herald Bulletin's DeFabo reflects back on the Boilermakers' successful hire two decades ago of then-Wyoming HC Tiller. As you may recall, the Minnesota, Illinois, Purdue & Indiana jobs were all open at the same time & Tiller was in the mix at three. Tiller: "I then was faced with a dilemma, quite frankly. Do I want to accept the Purdue job? Or do I want to wait and see what comes along via Illinois or Minnesota?" Former Pudue AD Burke says his peers around the Big Ten probably didn't believe a program could have high level success throwing the ball so much in cold weather & that Tiller's greatest strength may have been his ability evaluate talent. Former Boilermaker & NFL veteran Okobi on the culture change, "I’ll put it like this, if Tony Soprano walks into the room, he doesn’t have to say anything. You know he’s the boss. That’s the energy that Joe Tiller brings." (link)
Hard not to love oral histories of seminal sports moments & with the Iron Bowl tomorrow, here's one for the incredible 'Kick Six' back in 2013 when Auburn beat Alabama. It's a five-part affair with commentary from all the notable CBS voices who were in front of the camera & behind the scenes. Color man Danielson right before the kick, "One frustrating part of it is that there’s only so much time to get all this stuff in. Everything’s happening really fast, and you’re trying to give all the possibilities to the viewer of what might still happen. Verne has his job, Verne is laying out the scene. You don’t want to overtalk it. You want to make sure you’ve got the right guys on the field, who the kicker’s going to be. There’s a lot of stuff going on at the same time. So that’s all playing out while it’s happening in real time. People don’t understand— all of us that do this, are all the little things that are happening on the periphery of what’s happening in the game." Lots more. (link)
The new Snapchat Spectacles are already a part of one organization's social media strategy as the NHL's Minnesota Wild are a first mover. Early snaps from the Spectacles have been from the Wild's bench, a pre-game soccer circle with players & from atop the Zamboni. Digital Managing Editor & Content Strategist Ervin: "We’re always looking for new ways to bring our fans closer to the team and the game. The Spectacles certainly delivered, providing a cool, new point-of-view that was really simple to execute." (link)
Elsewhere Around Higher Ed: Faculty at Northern Iowa will prepare its own analysis & review of the four Prez candidates that will visit Cedar Falls next week. Faculty leadership says the search committee's work "won't be enough to provide a definitive statement about who the faculty thinks should be the next president." (link); Moody's dropped the University of Louisville's credit rating by a notch to A1 & the Foundation's standing by three notches to A3. Leadership uncertainty, below expected cash flow margin & low liquidity were all noted reasons for the downgrade for the university. A 20% decrease in cash & investments & an upcoming forensic audit were two for the Foundation. (link); Western Illinois to get $8.4M, Eastern Illinois 5.6M & Chicago State $3M+ from the state board of higher education to cover some costs through the end of the year. (link)
Also noticed: Another read on Western Michigan FB HC Fleck's rise, this one from the LA Times. (link); Don't recall noting this last week as it looks like Jackson Lewis PC aided Southern in its NCAA review. (link); Here's how LSU is weaving in a sponsor to its in-game FB score updates on Twitter. (link); Money in streaming (and one reason why linear TV faces big challenges): Netflix will reportedly pay comedian Chappelle $60M for three specials ($20M per) with the intent of driving new subscribers. Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb will soon hire a new FB HC & this 1.Q provides some good perspective on what process he undertook before taking over the Panthers department back in the Fall of 2014. "There's no successful athletic program without Presidential support & Board support for athletics because there are a number of opportunities for people to be supportive, but also not be supportive." Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 5:27)
