Hello

Thank you for all your support this week. We have had another great week at Tallis, with a musical performance at the RBG Blackheath Halls Instrumental Extravaganza, a visit form Trinity Laban third year students to dance for us, a French Play as well as the usual excitements of daily life.

It struck me that you may not know what we do in assemblies? We have them every morning from 0840-0900, one year group at a time. They’re like this:

The Year 7-11 year form groups line up in silence in the dining room before going into the room. Usually, the Head of Year talks to the group about the basics of life – attendance, punctuality, equipment, working hard, being kind to one another, Habits, Character. Sometimes another teacher or a member of the senior team will present something for the young people to think about or act upon. Often we have visitors. So, for example, in Year 9 yesterday Mr Brown talked about what we mean by Harmful and Abusive behaviour – though he was sorely tried by the projector which had other ideas – and today Mr Bradshaw talked to Year 12 about the dangers of drugs. I joined in too, warning them that the quickest route out of Tallis is a drugs-related one. (On that matter, we have the Amy Winehouse Foundation doing some more work with us next week about addiction. They have been very good so far, hard-hitting and powerful.) Assemblies are an important part of our community and we take them very seriously. Latecomers are not admitted and we work hard to train the young people on how to be an attentive, receptive and respectful audience: all good lessons for life!

World Scholar's Cup

Now in its eleventh year, the World Scholar’s Cup is a global non-profit educational initiative with a mission of inclusive enrichment, for students aged 11-18 of every background, from both state and private schools in over fifty countries. From Australia to Zimbabwe, the idea is the same: to inspire in every participant a love of learning and a sense of global citizenship. Each year our diverse young scholars explore a new interdisciplinary theme, spanning topics from science and technology to history and art. They then apply their learning in a series of collaborative and competitive challenges, from team debate (which includes a peer feedback element) to a fast-paced problem-solving bowl, all in a safe and supportive setting.

The London Regional Round of the World Scholar’s Cup will be hosted at Thomas Tallis School on the weekend of 21-22nd January 2017. Students form teams of 3 and we can submit as many teams as we have interested students. While there is no preparation necessary, we will be running a WSC club on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15-4:15pm so that we can get used to the different challenges that students will be taking part in.

Interested students should get in touch if they would like to take part. They can find me in my office (2234) or classroom (1334).

Laban Dancers perform at Tallis

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to host a performance from Trinity Laban's Flux Dance Company as part of their touring double bill of works. The students, staff and parents were treated to two delightfully current contemporary pieces of choreography, followed by an in-depth Q&A with members of the company.

Thank you to all those who were a part of it!

Please feel free to email Ms Rider if you would like to find out about any upcoming performances within the dance department.

Year 12 Religious Studies trip

Year 12 Religious Studies attended an theological and political conference, that gave them the opportunity to ask big questions and discuss different ideas, including:

  • How should the church respond to the transgender community?
  • Is suicide ever justifiable?
  • What is a miracle?

and many more fantastic questions. They represented themselves and the school fantastically - what brilliant minds they have!
