Rescuing nature's bounty for the benefit of our community

Giving Thanks

Dear GleanSLO Supporter,
All of us here at GleanSLO and the Food Bank- staff, Steering Committee and friends alike- give thanks for all of you! Year round, we are so grateful for the full and generous giving spirit of the SLO County community.  Every volunteer, donor (produce, financial, in-kind and beyond) and Food Bank partner agency played a role in getting more than one million pounds of local produce to our neighbors in need. Since GleanSLO’s inception, more than 1,500 volunteers contributed 16,000 volunteer hours to pick produce. Over 400 farmers and homeowners made this possible by sharing their bounty. Each year, hand-picked gleaned produce feeds an estimated 46,000 individuals in SLO County.

“It is from this idea of togetherness, of helping each other, caring for our planet, and our community, that GleanSLO was born. In recognizing our history and accomplishments, we are grateful for many people who gathered around the table and dedicated endless hours of visioning and brainstorming to make this happen. We won’t forget the grassroots way we started and the people who believed this was possible.” - Carolyn Eicher, GleanSLO Steering Committee member and co-founder.

From all of us here at GleanSLO, we hope this holiday season fills your heart with the same sense of gratitude. In this season of giving, please consider making a gift to GleanSLO. Giving Tuesday is a global day for giving back. All across the nation people are embracing this day as an opportunity to raise money for local nonprofits. This type of day inspires philanthropy, encourages acts of kindness, allows us to collaborate with our neighbors, and celebrates generosity.

Meet Roxanne, our new Program Manager!

My relationship with GleanSLO began when our farm (RobinSong Farms) needed some help while we were out of town. GleanSLO harvested our rapidly growing zucchini for two weeks. This was the start of a beautiful relationship.  Since then, we have used their services many times. Between gleans and donations, I slowly began to know many of members of the GleanSLO team. Everything about GleanSLO interests me! I hate to see produce go to waste. It’s surprising that we live in a country where many people are food insecure, yet we have more than enough produce to feed the nation. To end hunger, we need to live sustainability and GleanSLO aims to follow these principles. Being a farmer gives me a deep connection to GleanSLO because I have seen the abundance and the need in my neighborhood. I am very excited to be a part of an organization bringing so much positive change to our community.”-Roxanne Sanders, GleanSLO Program Manager

Thanks for trotting with us
Thank you to everyone who walked, ran, and skipped with us on Thanksgiving morning at the Turkey Trot! This time of year can be hard for anyone without a reliable food source. This event’s purpose was to walk as a community, raising funds and awareness for the Food Bank Coalition and all of its programs, helping us increase the number of families we can help. Every $1 donated will provide $10 worth of nutritious food for our neighbors during the Holiday season.

Mixing it up
The Food Bank had the honor of hosting the SLO Chamber Mixer in our new facility on November 16th. Dylan, GleanSLO’s AmeriCorps member, stole the show with his deep knowledge and understanding of GleanSLO. It was wonderful to welcome the community members to our new home.

“I enjoyed being able to share my passion of GleanSLO with other people in our community who either didn’t know about GleanSLO or didn’t know about gleaning.”- Dylan Jones

Stay tuned for our Grand Opening Event coming in January! We look forward to welcoming you into our new home.
Tom Ikeda, growing a healthy community
Tom was GleanSLO’s very first donating farmer and has shared more than 75,000 pounds of produce with those in need in SLO County since 2010. He is a natural partner, sharing the GleanSLO vision: through the act of harvesting and sharing food, we connect and nourish our community to build stronger relationships and a deeper appreciation for our food. As a GleanSLO advocate and as a parent to several children graduating from Mission College Prep (MCP) High School, Tom has given hundreds of MCP high school students the opportunity to work in the fields. Students have gained an appreciation for our local food system, farmers, farm workers and the needs of the food insecure in our local community.

GleanSLO extends our thanks to Tom Ikeda for sharing his bounty to benefit the community. It is community members like Tom who make it possible to feed our neighbors who need the most help, but have the least access to fresh, local food. Thank you, Tom, for growing a healthy community!
Feeling generous?
We have a day for giving thanks, we have two days for getting deals, now we have a day for charitable giving: #GivingTuesday. By supporting GleanSLO with a monetary donation you are helping to end food waste in SLO County. The success of GleanSLO depends on donations from the community. Here are a few of our immediate needs.
