Sunday September 18th saw the 10th Annual Cultus Lake Triathlon...and what an amazing day it was! To celebrate the 10th anniversary we added a Half Iron to the mix for the last race of the 2016 BC calendar. Our sold out field saw the likes of speedsters, Brittany Dunbar (who was Kona bound the month later), Angela Froese and the always fun to watch, newly married Lauren Powell. On the men's side.  Anthony Toth and Dylan Gleeson put on great show in the standard distance with Dylan edging out Anthony for the win by 49 seconds, Jeff Symonds anchored a relay team and to no one's surprise, Mike Fertuck was successful in accomplishing a three-peat in the sprint category. Winning the 1st Cultus Lake Half Iron on the men's side, with a time of 4:35:35, was a Dynamic Race Events Series Pass holder, Martin Caron from Garibaldi Heights and on the women's side, with a time of 5:32:08, Vernon's Erica Moser. Congratulations and thank you to all those who came out, first timers and seasoned pro's, to race with us at Cultus Lake!

I decided in 2012 to enter into this crazy, wonderful world we call triathlon...I was determined to finish a Half Iron in 2013. I became transfixed on my training, a drowning non-swimmer, I knew this had to be addressed. I hired a coach, I learned about nutrition and transitions and brick workouts. And at the end, I accomplished what I set out to do! And I was hooked!

Fast forward to 2014, where I had the opportunity to become involved in the production side of triathlon. I embraced the opportunity and laser focused my efforts as I had when on the athlete side of things. Learning my new language that included, traffic management plans, porta-potties, swim extraction plans, tech shirt ordering, registration rollovers and refund policies. The curtain had been pulled back on the world of race production -  and I can say with no doubt, that as an age group athlete I had NO IDEA what happened behind the scenes! I can honestly say that in all of the races I had been to, it never really occurred to me where the toilets and fencing came from, what forsaken time the bike course signage was dropped, that permits had to be pulled and guestimating food to feed 500+ athletes isn't as easy a task as I may have thought, and that once I, as the athlete, was done for the day, the race crew wasn't! I can tell you now, it's an exhausting amount of work...and every finish line smile, grimace and sometimes tears, make it all worth it, without a doubt! There really isn't anything like it.

We are full speed ahead planning the 2017 season, and with all of the event options out there, I would like to say a big thank you in advance to all of you who are choosing to race with us. Independent triathlons are becoming a rare find in North America, I can only say that if you the athlete want to continue to have local, independent races as an option, you need to support them!
