1.Question Interview: Brad Wolverton - Outgoing Reporter/Journalist - The Chronicle of Higher Education
UC Davis AD Blue has a FB HC spot to fill & submitted a 2,200-word "program blueprint" on how he wants the Aggies to look moving forward. The non-negotiables: 1) We must recruit a head coach that is an excellent fit for the tremendous opportunity of leading a new era of football at UC Davis.; and, 2) We must continue expanding donor support for our football program so we have the resources needed to create structural advantages over our competition. Details the characteristics of upstanding character, expertise on how to recruit highly accomplished student-athletes, head coach or coordinator experience, strong intellect & communication skills, expertise with program-building, an understanding of how to win at UC Davis, track record of building "winning habits," coaching for self-sufficiency rather than dependence, embracing the importance of academic & the student-athlete outcomes & affinity for UC Davis. Notes large gifts received by FCS peers Montana ($7M), South Dakota State ($12.5M), Cal Poly ($10M) & North Dakota State ($10M) to help enhance their programs as his external team pushes for more support. Lots more. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd with sharp thoughts on some movements around the FB HC carousel, "No disrespect to anyone, but if you think some high-powered agents haven't manipulated the news to this point, you're nuts. I just can't tell you how much manipulation or how nuts you are." I guess one thing to remember this time of the year is the media never loses. (link); SI's Thamel runs through all the possibilities up & down the FBS ranks. (link); Texas HC Strong is reportedly due to meet with Longhorns brass this morning. (link); Here's the interview Houston HC Herman did before yesterday's loss to Memphis. "Don't believe everything you read" or something like that. (link); If you do believe some of what you read, Florida State HC Fisher turned down $6.5M annually from LSU. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Former longtime Cuban President Fidel Castro passed away yesterday at the age of 90. Sports were a constant area of focus for the controversial Castro. From ESPN: "At the Olympics, Castro's athletes were at their best. Cuba won no gold medals at any Games from 1906 to 1968 -- but all of that changed beginning in 1972. In Munich, then in Montreal and then in Moscow -- Games the United States boycotted -- Cuba was an Olympic force. Most impressive, heavyweight boxer Teofilo Stevenson won three consecutive gold medals, and Alberto Juantorena became the first man to win both the 400- and 800-meter races. Cuban sport was back in the international spotlight in 1991, as the host of the Pan-Am Games, which, more than any athlete, Castro dominated. He seemed to be at every venue, cheering every heat and every Cuban athlete." More. (link)

Penn State says it won't fight the $2.4M fine handed down by the Federal Government as a result of how it handled oversight & reporting processes connected to the Sandusky saga. Prez Barron indicates the university disagrees with some of the investigation's findings, but it won't keep PSU from leveling the financial penalty. "It is Penn State's goal to not only meet the standards articulated by the Department of Education, as we believe we currently do, but to set a new standard for Clery compliance in higher education." As a matter of context, the previous high for a Cleary Act fine was $357K to Eastern Michigan back in 2007. Daily Press scribe Teel catches up with retired Virginia Tech FB HC Beamer, says he was committed to giving first-year Hokies boss Fuente room to operate, "Transitions like this often don’t go well. This one couldn’t have been any better." Impressed with & thankful for Fuente's decision to award Beamer's #25 to a deserving special teams player each week. Beamer also addressed the team yesterday before it boarded buses on the way to today's rivalry match-up with Virginia. "Everything has just fallen into place. Not many people leave their job and they name a street after you and still welcome you back and still want to get their picture with you. Most places they want to get you out of town as fast as they can." More. (link)
The City of Portland is a key support spot for Maine Men's Hockey as it will play three games in Cross Insurance Arena this season, including one today versus Brown & another in February against Notre Dame. Per AD Kreech, Portland has the largest pocket of Black Bear alums, plus athletics is working with the Maine Sports Commission on NCAA Hockey regional action & the America East WBB Tourney in '17 & '18. Senior Assoc. AD for Development Woodcock says there's not a huge financial difference in playing in Portland compared to at home in Orono even though average attendance is larger. (link)
Rutgers MBB HC Pikiell has been a part of a couple of program builds during his career & has another on his hands with the Scarlet Knights. "There hasn’t been any obstacle that I didn’t see before that I’m facing here. I’ve been here before. I remember coach [Jim] Calhoun, his first year at UConn, they’d ask if it was in Alaska. That was what people knew of UConn a long time ago, when Coach Calhoun first got there. When I went to Stony Brook, people didn’t know if we were Division I, II or III. […] You’ve got to have consistency, and you’ve got to have a foundation, and we’re trying to do that in the best league in the country. We’ve gotten better, but we need to continue to develop." (link)
The Washington Redskins recently upgraded wifi in FedExField to 10 gigs per second & specifically mentioned the ability for fans to watch other NFL games on their devices while taking in the home team in-person. Also, season ticket holders received NFL RedZone & NFL Game Pass as part of their membership package this year. The New England Patriots just went through a similar enhancement & VP of Content Kirsch commented, "We recognize that in-stadium, high-density Wi-Fi connectivity is the next frontier for the NFL […] Looking ahead, we’re confident that we’re prepared to meet our fans’ increasing connectivity demands. Whether it’s wearables, augmented reality or accessing next-gen player stats, we’ll be ready with the best available technology to support our fans." (link)
Iowa FB student-athlete Ekakitie says he was the target of racial slurs by a Nebraska peer during yesterday's match-up in Iowa City. "I’m one to completely respect my opponents at all times, but they had a few guys out there that decided to talk a whole lot and a couple guys who were throwing around derogatory, racial slurs. Anyone that is willing to openly go out of their way and throw that around — even in a competitive environment — I think you’re a piece of trash." Ekakitie chose not to identify the Cornhusker involved, a statement from Nebraska said they are aware of the situation. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz reports on the latest round of bonuses earned by FB HCs after yesterday's action. Finishing in the Top 5 of total offense should get Texas Tech HC Kingsbury $25K, the MAC West crowd earns Western Michigan's Fleck $40K, an eighth win for Iowa HC Ferentz means another $500K & the same accomplishment at Memphis rings $35K for HC Norvell, $50K for Washington boss Petersen with a Pac-12 North championship, bowl eligibility at NC State equals $25K for HC Doeren, more. (link)
Notre Dame FB HC Kelly won't spend as much time on the West Coast recruiting as he normally does after the season-finale with USC today, instead focused on exit interviews with his student-athletes. Despite an underwhelming season, Kelly says the goals in South Bend won't be any different moving forward, "We're here to win championships and we're here to get our degree at Notre Dame. I don't think any of that has changed. We've had a subpar season, but that's going to just be a hiccup, and you'll be part of a championship program when you come to Notre Dame." (link)
Interesting note in a Fox Sports piece from MLB reporter Rosenthal on a possible lockout coming to professional Baseball. "The owners’ proposal to end direct draft-pick compensation essentially would create unrestricted free agency in baseball for the first time. But the union strongly opposes an international draft, in part because foreign-born amateurs do not have the same leverage and opportunities as their U.S.-born counterparts, including college, sources said. Under direct draft-pick compensation, a team loses a selection for signing a free agent who received a qualifying offer, which this year was valued at $17.2 million. Draft-pick compensation still would exist under the owners’ proposal, but only indirectly; a team that loses a qualified agent still would receive a bonus pick." Lots more & we'll know more by the beginning of next month on where negotiations are headed. (link)
For the first time ever, ad revenue for Facebook is expected to top totals for even the largest traditional media outlets like Comcast & Disney. But, as noted in its recent earning call, ad load is a concern for the social media giant, meaning financial progress is likely to slow due to simply running out of space & inventory. There's plenty of debate around the movement of brand advertising dollars, which make up the majority of TV's bottom line, & Snapchat is another player trying to earn share from the biggest advertisers. (link)
Also noticed: Construction at Toyota Stadium in Frisco means this year's FCS championship game will be played in front of a capacity crowd of 15,300, down from 20,086. (link); More from USA Today's Berkowitz: "Arizona State's loss to Arizona leaves 11 bowl spots open and only 11 teams that can still get to 6 wins without having losing record." (link); Benches cleared on to the field during yesterday's North Carolina-NC State match-up in Chapel Hill. (link); Keeping an eye on NFL TV ratings, these tweets from Ad Age's Crupi, "CBS' Vikings-Lions Thanksgiving Day game drew 27.6M viewers, 13.0 HH rating. HHs up 6% vs year-ago window (12.3)—but that was a 45-14 rout. Fixed: WAS-DAL drew 35.1M viewers, all-time high for a regular-season game on Fox. NFL record: KC-DAL, Turkey Day 1995: 35.7M, on NBC." (link, link); Interesting sponsorship execution as JMG Security took over all digital at the Honda Center during a power play for the Anaheim Ducks.
