Chapter Spotlight:
Albert Einstein College of Medicine Branch
The Amazing ladies of Albert Einstein College of Medicine's AMWA Branch have definitely been busy!
Here is a list of events that they've had over the past few months...

- Cervical Cancer Awareness Kick-off with Dr. Shobha Krishnan:
Dr. Shobha Krishnan, the director of the Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer, gave a compelling talk about the importance of HPV vaccines and pap smears to prevent cervical cancer worldwide. The event served as a kickoff to their initiative to spread cervical cancer awareness at the ECHO Student-Run Free Clinic.

- The Mentor/Mentee Wine and Cheese Night

- The Einstein Pre-med Mentorship Day:
This event was a conference with pre-med students from 3 undergraduate institutions in the Bronx that included both a medical student and admissions committee panel, mock interviews and round robin discussions.

- Breast Cancer Awareness Beer Pong:
The event held at Skyline managed to raise $163 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

- Breast Cancer Lunch and Learn with Dr. Nancy Dintenfass:
Dr. Dintenfass, a Diagnostic Radiologist who specializes in breast imaging, spoke about mammography, ultrasound and other breast imaging techniques, while also sharing her amazing story on why she was led to become a physician.

Einstein's AMWA branch has always been a very active branch and a great one to connect with if your are interested in getting more involved with AMWA!

Continue the amazing work ladies!
Studio AMWA Presents:
AMWA's Magical Music Medley Project
Becoming a physician is a long journey, full of challenges, questions, and beautiful moments. To celebrate these well trodden steps, Studio AMWA asks student and physician members to lip sync a short, fun video to one of the four designated Disney songs.  This Disney-style video mash up reminds us to keep finding the joy and supporting each other as we journey forward!

Project Instructions:
The idea behind this project is to celebrate everyone in AMWA who is on this journey and to remind us all how much support is out there. To do this, the project breaks AMWA into its divisions--the stages of becoming a doctor. Each stage has a particular song that lightheartedly represents the challenges and joys they are facing:

Pre-Meds: “I Wanna Be Like You” – Jungle Book
1st/2nd Year Med: “A Whole New World” – Aladdin
3rd/4th Year Med: “Go the Distance” – Hercules
Residents and Attendings: “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” – Mulan
Attendings/Everyone: “Circle of Life” – Lion King

Submitting videos is easy! Videos can be taken on an iPhone in widescreen mode ( long-ways or side-to-side).  If you do not send it in this format, the video will be not be accepted. When making the video, you can sing out loud or lipsync to the music link provided. All song lyrics can be found HERE and will also be on the Studio AMWA page

All submissions are due by Dec. 31, 2016 to Studio AMWA Member Olivia Roy at oroy@neomed.edu

The AMWA Student Hosting Program

The AMWA Student Hosting Program provides 4th year medical student members on the residency interview trail the opportunity to forgo costly hotel fees by providing the chance to stay with local women physicians, resident-physicians, and medical students. In addition to helping defray the costs of interviewing, it also allows for students to meet physicians within the community surrounding their potential residency program.

Requirements to utilize the AMWA Student Hosting Program:
  • Participants must be National AMWA Student Member
    • Not a national member yet? Sign up here!
If you are interested in finding a host, please including the following information in an email to Caroline Mullis, Student Programming Chair at programming@amwa-student.org:

1. Your name
2. Name of the Program where you are interviewing, as well as program city and state
3. Dates of Stay
4. Phone number
5. Email address

Our goal is for members to contact potential hosts and within 24 hours have a list of potential hosts in requested locations.

*Note to students: Remember that hosts are volunteering their time and space. Please be courteous and respectful in your communications and during your time as a house guest. Consider bringing a small thank you gift to your host, i.e. Starbucks card, mug from your medical school, etc. Additionally, please note that hosts will only provide lodging for students.

Additionally, as part of our revitalization efforts of this program, we are currently looking to create an updated list of hosts.

 AMWA REGIONAL CONFERENCE SUCCESS!!!

Our Regional Directors and their leadership teams managed to organize some amazing events!
Check out some of the highlights from the Region 6 Conference!

AMWA Region 6 Conference:

"Women & Cancer"

The Region 6 Conference was a big hit!  Held on Saturday, October 15th at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine in Kalamazoo, Michigan, had about 40 attendees.  The crowd, a mix of pre-meds, medical students, and physicians,  come from all over the Midwest including WMed, Western Michigan Univ., Michigan State Univ., Grand Valley, CMU, Wayne State, and Indiana University.

The theme, "Women and Cancer" provided a number of great discussions including the experiences of an Ob/Gyn Oncologist, resources available within the community for breast and cervical cancer screening and treatment, as well as how women can utilize physical and occupational therapy to assist in treating conditions due to cancer treatment, such as uncomfortable sex or lymphedema.  We also had Dr. Jan Werbinski, who is the leader of the Sex and Gender Medical Education Summit, speak with us about her work.

Additionally, there was ample time and opportunity for everyone to meet and greet fellow students and physicians within the Midwest region!

Wishing you

all a wonderful
