Jon Klassen concludes his celebrated hat trilogy with a surprising twist with We Found a Hat.
Two turtles have found a hat. The hat looks good on both of them. But there are two turtles. And there is only one hat....
Evoking hilarity and sympathy, the shifting eyes tell the tale in this brilliantly paced story in three parts, highlighting Jon Klassen’s visual comedy and deceptive simplicity. The delicious buildup takes an unexpected turn that is sure to please loyal fans and newcomers alike.
Jon Klassen is the author-illustrator of I Want My Hat Back, a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book, and This Is Not My Hat, winner of the Caldecott Medal. Other prize-winning books for which he provided illustrations are two Caldecott Honor books, Sam and Dave Dig a Hole and Extra Yarn, both written by Mac Barnett, and Cat's Night Out, by Carolyn Stutson, which won the Governor General's Award for English-language children's illustration. He also illustrated House Held Up by Trees, written by Ted Kooser, and The Dark, written by Lemony Snicket.
Born in Winnipeg (he recently celebrated his birthday!), raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Jon Klassen now lives in Los Angeles. He was the art director for the 2009 animated music video for "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" by U2, and worked on the animation for the feature films King Fu Panda and Coraline.
RBC Taylor Prize longlist with
MARK LEIREN-YOUNG
The RBC Taylor Prize announced its
longlist last week and we were very pleased to see
Mark Leiren-Young's name on the list. Mark joined us for THIN AIR 2016, and we were taken with his enthusiasm and his friendliness.
His book
The Killer Whale Who Changed the World is a fascinating, heartbreaking account of the first publicly exhibited captive killer whale—a story that changed the way we see orcas and sparked the movement to save them.
The 2017 RBC Taylor Prize shortlist will be announced at a news conference on January 11 and the 2017 Prize winner will be announced at a gala luncheon and awards ceremony on March 6, 2017.
Well done, Mark!
Winnipeg represents at the
Governor General's Lit Awards Gala
And speaking of awards, Festival Director Charlene Diehl was invited to attend the GG ceremony and dinner at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
Also dressed in their finery and putting a positive spin on Winnipeg: Chris Hall and Lori Baker, co-owners of McNally Robinson Booksellers, aka Best Bookstore on Earth.
Missing in action at Rideau Hall:
François Gilbert, winner of the French-language GG for kids' literature, popular guest at THIN AIR 2016, and hands-down winner of the Mr Congeniality Award. FB sightings suggest he's learning to surf in Bali. (Mmmm, it's warm there.)
Checking out snow shovels...
