HGC Annual Meeting

The 2016 Annual Meeting was held two weeks ago at the Phipps Center for the Arts. We kicked off the event with social hour, specifically set aside as a way for the board to connect with current and prospective owners. We took time to recognize our 2016 volunteers for the wonderful work that they did this year. We are so grateful for their commitment to the co-op. During the formal meeting the board members provided status updates regarding the work that was done in 2016, the plans for 2017, and we ended the meeting by voting on new board members.

At the close of the meeting we held a Q&A session which brought about some great questions from the attendees and provided us with solid feedback. The Q&A also gave us the opportunity to discuss our goals for 2017 and what they mean for the future of the co-op. To be very honest, in 2016 we saw our ownership numbers lose momentum. As you know, building our ownership base is critical in being able to open a co-op in the future. We had set a milestone in 2016 for 600 owners—and we did not meet it. (We are currently around 428 owners.) In 2017, the board has committed to changing the way we “market” to both our owners and non-owners—and we are excited to be planning some new (and unique) community events. Let me assure you that as a board, we are “all in” for 2017.

But we need your help. In one year from now we will re-assess where we stand in meeting our goal of 600—and if we are still unable to meet that goal (which will allow us to start looking at site options) we will be taking an in-depth look at whether or not a co-op is still of interest to our community. In addition to the work that we will be doing this coming year, we are looking to you to help us spread the word, as we know that your collective voices drive change for our great community.

HGC at Reindeer by the Park

HGC hosted a booth at Hudson’s annual Reindeer by the Park on December 3rd at the Riverfront Athletic Club  in downtown Hudson.

Kids stopped by HGC booth to make a fun Christmas tree ornaments while on their way to visit with Santa.

Thank you to our HGC volunteers for helping close to 200 young guests make an ornament during this fun filled, but busy, day. Our volunteers were Jacki Bradham, Amy Noonan, Deb Beaudway, Romona Robinson and her daughter Lily.

Root Beer Cranberry Sauce

Here is an easy alternative to the ubiquitous red cylinder of jelly on most holiday tables.  This requires very little prep, is easy and will make a solid impact.

Ingredients:
12-ounce bag of fresh Wisconsin Cranberries
12-ounce can/bottle root beer made with cane sugar (I prefer Virgil’s)
1 cup Sugar in the Raw
½ cup light brown Sugar
1TBsp. Cornstarch

In a small bowl mix together the sugars and the cornstarch until well combined. In a medium saucepan over medium heat: Bring root beer to a boil with the cranberries. After one minute of boiling add the sugar/cornstarch mixture. Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and reduce for 5 min. Chill to serve.

Great to use as is on any holiday table setting or:
  • serve warm on a wheel of brie (with walnuts and crackers)
  • mix it with equal parts ketchup for an awesome turkey burger condiment
  • use instead of cherries in your favorite brandy old fashioned
  • mix a bit into some softened cream cheese and put on pancakes or French toast
