December 2016

Sabaidee and Happy Holidays! Another busy and eventful year draws to a close at TAEC. Our small team continues to grow and there is always another exciting project around the corner! Every year we are thankful to our visitors, partners, and friends who make it possible for us to achieve so much! Kawp jai lai lai!

As 2016 comes to an end, we reflect on our achievements and challenges, but also look ahead to broaden our scope of impact on Laos' ethnic communities and artisans. Next year marks our 10th anniversary and we have plans to introduce additional activities and programmes for our community and international visitors. Stay connected to TAEC on our website, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter for more information!

Everyone here at TAEC wishes you a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2017!

2016 Achievements

If you don't mind, we'd like to do a little bragging. We set big goals at the beginning of 2016 and we are excited to share our successes with you!

  • Through our outreach programme, 526 Lao children and youth learned about ethnic diversity, traditional crafts, and cultural heritage.
  • Rural artisans earned over US$110,000 directly from purchases of handicrafts by TAEC. We also added 35 new artisans to our programme (see Phet's story below).
  • Approximately 25,800 international and Lao visitors learned from our exhibits this year - nearly 10% more than 2015.
  • We opened a new ethnobotanical exhibit, "Seeds of Culture: From Living Plants to Handicrafts" curated by Dr. Yukino Ochiai, a Japanese researcher at Ryukoku University. This exhibit was made possible by sponsorships from Professor William Klausner, EXO Foundation, and Saffron Coffee.
  • 16 new handicraft products were added to our catalogue including unique items made with Job's tear seed beads and traditional textiles from Southern Laos.

Support Ethnic Artisans This Season!

Are you still on the hunt for the perfect holiday gift for friends, family, or colleagues? What better way to show you care than to give them gifts that give back! Your purchases provide our village producers, who are mainly rural minority women, earnings to supplement their household income while practicing and preserving their traditional skills!

Why shop with TAEC?

Expanding Our Livelihoods Development
Programme in 2017

One of the most rewarding aspects of TAEC's work is connecting and growing with new communities and artisans. This year, we were able to expand our handicrafts programme to over 600 producers and 33 villages, and we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to a few of them.

Please meet the newest members of TAEC's artisan group, Phet Nonglao, and her mother Ngert! They are both from the Nge ethnic group and live in Sekong Province, in southern Laos.

Phet learned to weave from her mother using the traditional foot-braced backstrap looms when she was about 15 years old. She weaves every day, and her large cotton textiles feature human figures and animals, such as frogs, fish, and antelope. She uses natural dyes to create soft colours, gathering and buying the fruits and woods she needs every few months. This is Phet's primary livelihood, supporting her, her mother, husband, daughter, and granddaughter (and one more baby on the way!). Phet works with six other women to weave shawls, throws, and placemats which you can now purchase at the TAEC Museum Shop and Boutique.

Women and Folktales Now Available on DVD!

Own and share a piece of Lao folklore with your entire family! Women and Folktales - Traditional Stories from Ethnic Villages in Laos is now available on DVD! These are heartwarming tales captured on film of seven women, from Hmong, Kmhmu, and Tai Lue villages around Luang Prabang, recounting 19 traditional folktales in their native languages and subtitled in English.

Women are important storytellers and bearers of cultural heritage in Laos. However, their voices are rarely heard outside their communities, due to traditional homebound responsibilities and their lack of confidence in participating in public forums. The Luang Prabang Film Festival and TAEC launched this project to empower ethnic minority women in Laos and document and disseminate their traditional stories using film.

HELP US DO MORE IN 2017!
DONATE OR VOLUNTEER

Our admission fees and handicraft sales cover our daily operations, including salaries, electric bills, and our artisans in villages all over Laos. With additional donations and specialised volunteers, we're able to take on special projects to empower ethnic minority communities and celebrate culture diversity in Laos. These include school outreach activities, handicraft trainings, new exhibitions, and research.
