President's Message

BuzzHello <<First Name>>!

We had another great turnout at our January lunch meeting. Big thanks to Gerry Thorning of Greenfield Dynamics for discussing with us the topic of Solar Thermal systems.

I assume you all have been hitting the driving range to prepare for the 2011 Golf Tournament! See below for more information and contact Charlie Velasquez with any questions.

Our meeting topic this month will be on ASHRAE Standard 189.1, with our speaker being Kent Peterson, past ASHRAE Society President. Note: The meeting day and location for this topic is Wednesday (February 9th) at the Viscount Suite hotel (4855 E. Broadway). To see the full list of upcoming lunch meeting topics, visit our website at www.ashraetucson.org/calendar.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing everyone at the February meeting!

January Lunch Meeting

  • Topic: ASHRAE Standard 189.1
  • Date: Wednesday, February 9th
  • Time: 12:00 noon - 1:30pm
  • Location: Viscount Suite Hotel (4855 E. Broadway)

KentLearn about ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, except Low-Rise Residential. The standard is intended for code adoption and provides minimum requirements for high performance new buildings and major renovations. The standard is a compliance option within the recently released International Green Construction Code (IgCC). It is applicable to new commercial buildings and major renovation projects covering five main topic areas, including energy efficiency, sustainable sites, water use efficiency, a building's impact on the atmosphere materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

This lecture explores this new standard and its impact on green building codes by providing detailed information regarding the intent, criteria, and goals of implementing this standard. Current and future direction of building energy standards and codes is also discussed.

Attendees will be able to:

  • Differentiate Standard 189.1 from green building rating systems (e.g., LEED, Green Globes)
  • Recognize the importance of developing a code-intended standard for design of high-performance green buildings
  • Identify mandatory provisions in Standard 189.1 to increase awareness of the intent of the standard
  • Indentify the two compliance path options (Prescriptive and Performance) and their associated provisions in Standard 189.1

2011 Golf Tournament

GolfWe are looking for sponsors, players, and prizes for our 2011 golf tournament. Though the tournament has raised a lot of money for scholarships over the years you may not realize the different needs of the Tucson HVAC community that have also been funded through the golf tournaments. Proceeds from the 2010 Golf Tournament funded the $6,000 needed to teach the 2010 spring semester HVAC course at the U of A.

With this year's tournament we are aiming to fund student scholarships and ASHRAE Research Promotions. If you are interested in participating as a player or sponsor please fill out and return the golf tournament registration form. As you'll see on the registration form there are already sponsors signed up for the tournament. Sponsoring early lets everyone see that you are sponsoring throughout the year instead of only the month or two prior to the tournament.
