Structure and rhythm

Narrative emphasizes order and sequence, in a formal sense,
and is [...] appropriate for the study of change,
the life-cycle, or any developmental process.
Edward Bruner

Every change is a journey unfolding over time. From the recognition that something needs to be done differently through the tough moments of adaptation and the moment in which we tell ourselves that the change wasn´t so hard after all – our experience of these journeys are patterned by the stories we tell about them.

This holds true for the launch of a new product as well as the implementation of a new organisational structure. The moment we embark on such a journey, we make sense of it through or accounts of past, present and future.

But engaging our clients and colleagues is not only about the content, but also about the rhythm, structure and dramaturgy of the stories we tell. As marketers, communicators and change agents we know that what is said matters as much as when it is said.

From the ancient three-act structure of beginning, middle and end to Campbell´s hero´s journey and beyond we can tap into narrative frameworks as powerful tools to design and develop change architectures, learning processes and communication architectures.

At BEYOND STORYTELLING we want to explore the potential of rhythm and structure of these narrative frameworks for change, communication, marketing and learning:
  • Our learning journey is inspired by the hero´s journey and a great example how narrative structure can be used to design conferences and large group events
  • Arno Aschauer introduces different models and frameworks for storytelling
  • Nina Trobisch introduces the Heldenprinzip® – an approach and toolbox for the design of change journeys for individuals, teams and organizations
  • Ute Clement explores in her workshop the commonalities between the journeys of heros and heroines
  • Marco Ruckenbrod applies dramaturgical concepts to brand management and strategic marketing
