Next meeting: Annual Christmas Party

Fran Aitkens, one of PEAVI’s founding members, has once again generously offered to host the annual PEAVI Christmas party at her home. Please join us! Spouses and partners are welcome to attend. Even children!

Date:  Tuesday, December 13th, 2016
Time:  6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Location:  Fran Aitkens’ place - 2023 Meadow Place, Victoria, BC (in Oak Bay).
Please remember to RSVP via party@peavi.ca.

Directions:  Meadow Place is on the east side of Foul Bay Road, two blocks south of the Fort / Foul Bay intersection, near the Oak Bay Save on Foods and the Oak Bay Rec Centre. Fran’s is the third house on the right. The party will be up the stairs; if you have difficulty with stairs, please let us know and we'll find a way to help you. Parking on Meadow Place may be limited, but parking on Foul Bay after 6 pm is OK, and the Save on Foods parking lot is nearby. Anyone care to carpool?

Gifts:  Remember to bring a wrapped gift for our fun gift exchange. This may be a new item from $5 to $10 or a re-gifted item you know a fellow PEAVI-ite will cherish for years to come. Please take your lovely gift home with you as you can always bring it back next year to swap again!

Food:  Fran will provide a meat chili and vegetarian chili, and a non-alcoholic punch. PEAVI will provide a splash of wine.
Attendees are encouraged to bring some food to share: a salad, some finger foods, a dessert or something else you’d like to share. (Include a printed list of ingredients if possible—allergens: shellfish, crustaceans, pork, dairy, onions. Gluten and dairy-free items welcome.)

Please RSVP to Fran with your name and the number of people attending to this email address: party@peavi.ca.

We hope to see you there!

Fall workshop: Summary

On Saturday, November 26th, we held the fall workshop: Skilful Structural Editing with Ruth Wilson, an editor with West Coast Editorial Services. We were pleased to have 20 people register for this workshop. We will begin planning the spring workshop in the New Year. If you have any suggestions for topics and/or presenters, please email Paula and Rowena at workshop@peavi.ca.

Volunteer corner

PEAVI has a few volunteer opportunities that would take an hour or two each month.

Meeting notice writer and distributor: Create monthly meeting notices and send them to the website volunteer and to Lynne, for inclusion in the bulletin. Closer to the date, send a reminder to members.

Job request distributor: Monitor incoming job request emails and forward legitimate job requests to the listserv.

Workshop promoter: We are looking for a PEAVI member to help us promote our workshops outside our organization. Most tasks can be done by email in the month leading up to each workshop. They include
  • posting online workshop listings to local newspapers and magazines, and on social media outlets;
  • contacting writers’ groups, college and university organizations, and other interested entities to help publicize PEAVI workshops.
If you are able to take on a role, please contact Lenore Hietkamp at chair@peavi.ca.

Member news

Esther Hart writes:
I had no intention of working this past summer. Being semi-retired, I like my holidays to extend from May to September. Then my friend Cynthia connected me with Geoff Strong, a climate scientist who had written Convenient Mistruths, a Novel of Intrigue, Danger, and Global Warming. I was intrigued. I worked on the book all of August and then went to Halifax in September. Since returning, we put on the final touches and the book is now available at Coles Tillicum. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It provides an excellent balance of fictional suspense with valuable information.

Geoff is the third semi-retired gentleman I’ve had the privilege to work with. They’ve all been wonderful clients.

Helping writers become published authors is so much more than a job.

PEAVI ad in WordWorks

PEAVI has purchased advertising space for a year in the flagship magazine of the Federation of BC Writers: http://www.bcwriters.ca/wordworks/. WordWorks is published quarterly; this is our second year. It's great visibility for PEAVI.

The ad was created by PEAVI member and designer extraordinaire Rhonda Ganz
