NSLA, ABC and AIATSIS highlight stories of the 1967 referendum
The Indigenous Project Group has been busy delving into their libraries' collections, surfacing an assortment of extraordinary stories that shaped, or were shaped by, the 1967 referendum. The public vote altered the Australian constitution, enabling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to be counted in the census and be subject to Commonwealth laws, designed to protect and serve all Australians. The stories surrounding the referendum will be showcased in the Right Wrongs digital exhibition, an interactive website produced in partnership with the ABC and supported by AIATSIS.
Woven together with oral histories, ephemera, photographs and film from contributing archives across the nation, the exhibition will also feature newly produced content from the ABC, exploring contemporary perspectives. Right Wrongs aims to tell a complex and comprehensive story of Indigenous resilience and strength, and will be launched in May 2017. In the meantime, if you would like to share how the ’Yes’ vote impacted your life, or find out what the referendum means to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians 50 years on, head to ABC Open.
