 Welcome to Summer Edition #1
Welcome to the first edition of our Summer Enews series for 2016/2017. While Chris is enjoying a month in the sun, I'll be taking over the reigns for all things editorial. This edition, we present a light and breezy version of our regular eNews, reflecting on the festive season and holidays!
Over the next three Summer editions, we'll still be serving up the latest music news - but we’ll be adding some reflections on the year that's been.
We continue our coverage of the ABC cuts and the implications for Australian Music here, and take a look at how Aussie musos are coming together to campaign to save RN here.
We have taken a look at some of the great music films and documentaries which have been released this year and Scarlett has given us the run down on the top experimental releases of 2016.

The Dreaming Award recognises an inspirational young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artist aged 18-26 years and supports the opportunity for them to create a major body of work through mentoring and partnerships, either nationally or internationally.

WAM’s ‘Sounds Of’ program brings entire recording studios to regional centres. WAM is calling out to songwriters, acts and sound engineers of all ages, levels of experience and music genres from the Great Southern region to participate in this great regional touring project.

6 - 10 December, Melbourne
Artists from Chamber Made Opera and researchers from RMIT University are investigating the relationship between live performance and digital artworks. The labs and performances will explore extended digital expressions of recent CMO works. The week-long program features open labs, performances, research panel discussions and key note presentations.
12 December
This webinar will investigate best practice when Commercialising Copyright. Running for 45 minutes and will cover: Best practice around buying, selling or licensing copyright material; Ways of maximising commercial outcomes from your protected content; New possibilities for distributing content.
9 – 13 January, Sydney
Is an educational program developed by Sydney Youth Orchestras, players will build their skills in a fun, safe and artistically challenging environment. Led by highly respected conductors and experienced tutors, players of all abilities will be given access to world class facilities, intensive tutorials and the opportunity to rehearse and perform in various large ensembles.

An initiative of Brisbane music company Sugarrush Music, big Sky Girls will see ten young female songwriters from across Queensland matched with established artists through a free six-month mentorship program aimed at building talent and establishing music careers.

10 December, Melbourne
This Symposium is presented by The Music, Mind and Wellbeing Group of The University of Melbourne. The stresses and strains of elite musical performance can have debilitating effects on the musical. This symposium offers opportunity for musicians to share their research to promoting performer wellbeing in order to maximise performance potential and enjoyment
CALL FOR PAPERS, Abstracts or synopses due 15 December
The annual conference, Music and the Moving Image, encourages submissions from scholars and practitioners that explore the relationship between the entire universe of moving images (film, television, video games, iPhone, computer, and live performances) and that of music and sound through paper presentations.
Call for papers deadline 2 January
The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) invites proposals for presentations at their 51st Conference. They welcome papers on the preservation and study of sound recordings - in all genres of music and speech, in all formats, and from all periods. Conference takes place 10- 13 May, Texas, United States.
12 – 15 January
The Illawarra Folk Festival has grown to be one of the largest festivals in Australia. The festival presents approximately 170 performers over four days. Performers, volunteers and audiences alike continue to return to the festival to experience and participate in the diversity of music and performances, and enjoy the intimate, vibrant, community atmosphere the festival has become renowned for.

Applications close 14 December
The Indigenous Professional Development Program exists to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and arts workers living in Victoria. Career and artistic development opportunities can vary from representation at significant national and international conferences, to the marketing and presentation of work.
Applications close 16 December
This program is for emerging artists who wish to build on their career beyond study. The mentorship structure will depend on the applicant’s proposal. Since 2002, the Helpmann Academy has facilitated nearly 200 mentorships for South Australian artists.
Applications close 19 December
The Artist with Disability Fellowship is offered by the State Government, in collaboration with Accessible Arts, to enable a professional NSW artist with disability to undertake a self-directed program of professional development. The Fellowship is open to artists working in any artform including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, writing, hybrid/interdisciplinary arts and screen content.
Applications close 19 December
Artists based in the ACT are now able to apply for funding to undertake significant interstate or overseas arts opportunities. Grants of $500 – $2000 are available to cover costs directly associated with the activity, including travel, accommodation and registration fees.

City of Sydney is on the hunt for the next set of creative practitioners for their William Street Creative Live/Work Space. Applications open until midnight 20 December.

Our favourite upcoming events and performances from our community
14 December, State Theatre Centre, Perth
Darkened Descent explores the ominous yet pensive combination of bass clarinet, percussion and piano as handled by composers across three generations. The intuitive patterns of Morton Feldman’s fragile sound world give way to the warm earthy blends of John Luther Adams.
15 – 18 December, La Mama Courthouse, Melbourne
Kle ZeynTheatre’s fourth production at La Mama, Carmilla, is a ghost story for theatre, and takes place against the backdrop of a through-composed musical score. An adaptation of Sheridan le Fanu’s 1872 gothic novella which is widely acknowledged as the first literary vampire tale. Carmilla was a major influence on the entire history of the post-folkloric vampire genre.
17 December, Windsong Pavilion, Four Winds, Bermagui
The Choir of St James’ will present a concert of choral music for Christmas.
Christmas music, carol singing under the stars, mulled wine and mince pies.
22 December, Tasmania
Hobart Wind Symphony perform new Australian works alongside two major works of David Maslanka, including the Australian premiere of his Clarinet Concerto with soloist Derek Grice.
11 – 22 January, Blacktown, NSW
Presented by Urban Theatre Projects, Blacktown Arts Centre and Sydney Festival. Staged in a multi-level car park in Blacktown, HOME COUNTRY is a theatrical triptych that explores place, identity, and what it means to be home.
