Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year from the
Enterprise Research Centre.

State of Small Business Britain Conference 2016 


ERC’s State of Small Business Britain Conference 2016, co-hosted with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Programme, welcomed over 100 delegates to the iconic London building, The Shard on 30th November.
The morning session was chaired by Lucy Armstrong, Chair of the ERC’s Advisory board, and began with a welcome from ERC Director Professor Stephen Roper, and an opening presentation from Charlotte Keenan of Goldman Sachs outlining the objectives and impacts of the 
10,000 Small Businesses Programme.
As is becoming something of a tradition at the ERC conference, after the opening welcome speeches we started the day with our new short video, “Growing Firms, Growing Jobs”, which powerfully summarises key trends in the geography of high growth firms in the UK, presenting headline findings from the UK Local Growth Dashboard 2016, also launched on the day of the conference.

Is our obsession with fast growth and job creation stifling productivity?

As he stood at the Dispatch Box on November 23rd, Chancellor Philip Hammond laid bare to Parliament a problem that has been vexing economists since the 2008 crash.

The UK, he intoned, has a truly dreadful productivity rate. To illustrate the point, he told MPs gathered for the Autumn Statement that the average UK worker takes five days to produce what a German worker manages in four.

Productivity matters because, in the long run, it’s how our economy remains competitive at the global level and creates the added value that drives up wages and living standards.

Mark Hart , Deputy Director, ERC contributed as an Expert panel member on the Barclays Entrepreneurs Index Report.Volume 8 .
The Barclays Entrepreneurs Index is a barometer of the entrepreneurial environment and activity in the UK. It uses a set of data indicators to track the UK’s performance at each stage of the entrepreneurial lifecycle – starting, growing and exiting a business – on an annual basis.

ERC Out and About
ERC's Enrico Vanino attended the
Regional Studies Association winter 2016 conference   presenting some results of
ERC project  on the spillover effects of growth heroes and the wider UK economy. In particular,exposing the economic impact of fast growing firms in regions and industrial sectors, highlighting the externalities of the high growth phenomenon on the productivity and employment growth of surrounding firms. 
Other presenters stressed how the global economic slowdown poses major concerns to many territories, through a decrease in employment, household incomes, corporate profitability and productivity. Economic uncertainties and uneven development contribute to growing social inequalities and the emergence of new economic powers.The 2016 Winter Conference of the Regional Studies Association presented a timely opportunity to discuss these issues, to identify the new research objectives, and to consider the challenges facing policymakers and practitioners.
