President's Message
Dear Members,
 MdHIMA, has been very busy this quarter! The Education Committee hosted a Quarterly Business Meeting, the Data Quality Committee had two 2017 ICD 10 Update Meetings and we hosted the AHIMA National Convention in the Charm City, Baltimore on October 15 to October 19, 2016. We had a great turn out from AHIMA members and it was great to see so many MdHIMA members actively participating and volunteering for this event to make it so successful. MdHIMA Committees and Board members continue to actively work and plan for the rest the year. Winter is sure to be exciting in MdHIMA!
AHIMA’s CSA HIM Awareness Coordinator, Godwin Odia, is assisting the Public Relations Committee in widening and deepening HIM awareness throughout the state. The committee is planning to visit local high school career days throughout the state to recruit students, and provide education about our industry by explaining what HIM is and the value that HIM professionals bring to the healthcare industry. The Data Quality Committee is hosting a meeting on December 20, 2016 at HSCRC. Educational and Advocacy Committees are collaborating on a trip to Annapolis in February to meet our state delegates. The MdHIMA Delegates participated in several sessions during the House of Delegate session in October; please see the Delegate Report. The next event for the Delegates will be the AHIMA Leadership Symposium and Hill Day on March 27 and March 28, 2017 in Washington, DC.

The Nominating Committee’s “Call for Nominations” is in full swing. If you are interested in running for a position please review the positions available on our website.

Recognition & Special Thanks
The AHIMA 88th National Convention at the Baltimore Convention Center in October was a great success. Over 3000 people attended the event. MdHIMA members and student volunteers were joined by students and volunteers from other state CSA's to make this event so successful. Thank you DCHIMA, DEHIMA, PAHIMA, VAHIMA and ILHIMA for your valued assistance.
Special recognition to the Volunteer Coordinators, Charlette Kwevie, Dennis Arante, Christine Donahue-Taylor, Virginia Bell and Patricia Walls-Stanley. They played an intricate role in assuring we had volunteers to cover all the task each day.
Special thanks to all those who volunteered to be Presiders. It is not always easy to stand in front of large crowds and introduce speakers, we are grateful we have people in our organization willing to lead.
Also, special thanks to the facilities who provided AHIMA members the opportunity to take educational tours of their sites and to the contact people at the facilities who helped make the special arrangements. Patricia Rodriguez, John Hopkins Health System, Cheryl Jones, CRISP and Robin Emrick, Union Hospital. The tours are a very special part of every AHIMA Convention. They gave members of AHIMA a chance to see what makes healthcare so special in our state.
Thank you also to all the members who attended the convention, networked and learned. We had great weather, lots of fun and we charmed our visitors during their visit to Maryland and the beautiful city of Baltimore.
As the Program Chair for the 88th AHIMA National Convention, it was my pleasure to serve and meet so many beautiful people and I look forward to seeing our members at the MDHIMA Annual Meeting & Data Analytics Workshop in May 2017 at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia, Maryland.

Delegates Report
In 2017, AHIMA is piloting a new program that will allow CSAs to request an HIM subject matter expert (SME) for a half or full day speaking engagement. Topics include auditing, CDI, coding (CPT/CM/PCS), data analytics, or privacy/security, as well as exam prep. Flexible pricing should make the program affordable for all states. Half day (3 CEUs) or full day (6 CEUs) for face to face training sessions, with handouts and hands-on application will be presented by an AHIMA SME.
Delegates are also working on a variety of practice briefs. These include Standards of Ethical Coding guidelines, HIM Reimagined and educational recommendations with focus on data analytics and informatics, Skilled Nursing Facilities CDI Toolkit, Managing a Data Dictionary, Physician Coding Toolkit, Information Asset Inventory and completing an Environmental Scan survey.

The Multigenerational Workforce, Moses Asiedu, MS, RHIA, President MdHIMA
Objective:
- Ensure understanding of what opportunities are emerging and how HIM activities will be performed,
- Brainstorm what the HoD can bring to these different generations as a profession that is relevant to all.
Situation/Background:
- Every generation brings different life experiences that have affected their expectations, values and work preferences,
- Employers need to better understand, communicate, train motivate and retain different generations at the same time.
Recommendations:
- Mentorship/Apprenticeship/Coaching
- Better communication between generations
- Defining the career path (career map)
- Build passion for profession
Regulatory Impact to the HIM Profession, Vicki Reynolds, RHIT, 2nd year Delegate MdHIMA
The group focused on challenges and opportunities for HIM profession in advocacy efforts for the State/National level.
Assessment:
- Unique Patient Identifier
- 42 CFR Mental Health
- Patient access -s.2511
- Advocacy based on November elections
- Everyone making informed decision
Recommendations:
- Partnership with other association: AHA, HIMSS, look to advocacy person for large health systems
- Topic specific toolkits for hot topics to be shared by the CSA local/regional
Communication: clear, concise, talking points, personal stories including social media.
HIM-Reimagined, Linda Metro, RHIA, President-elect MdHIMA
Objectives were to ensure an understanding of HIMR recommendations and rationale and brainstorm plans for collaboration with CSA and HoD leadership on HIMR planning activities.
Assessment:
- Changes in work force: connect work force needs to education
- Maintain core generalist education. What are appropriate tracks for particular areas (i.e. rural)?
- HIM awareness
- Job readiness and preparing for future roles
- Increase in need for education in all industries
- Current membership needs additional development and education
- Recognition that change is needed for future viability
- Impact on existing RHIT’s who choose not to fain further education
Recommendations:
- CSAs and educators should work directly with employers to define specialties both now and in the future
- Develop a draft curriculum map, workforce road map, and milestone plan

Advocacy Report
The theme of the AHIMA convention in Baltimore, Maryland was “Inspire Big Thinking to Launch Our Future”, and as members of MdHIMA, we will be advancing our advocacy efforts and our profession during the 2016-2017 year the following agenda.
MdHIMA board and advocacy chairman have contracted with the law firm of Alexander & Clever to facilitate networking and introductions which are required to advance our efforts at the state level. If you have a specific area of healthcare policy interest, or lack thereof please email me at vreynold@wvumedicine.org to add your concern to our meeting agenda.
- Dinner meeting for the committee chairs of the Government Relations and Finance Committees at Lewnes Steak House, Annapolis, MD, (January 2017 - date to be determined). This will give MdHIMA a great opportunity to meet the chairpersons and share with them who we are and describe the expert resources we can provide them. If you are interested in attending this event please email me at vreynold@wvumedicine.org to reserve your place at the meeting. Seating is limited.
- February 3, 2016: Our QBM will be held in the Maryland House of Delegates building Annapolis, Maryland in the meeting room. I will be sending out more information once our plans and guest speaker/topics have been finalized.
- February 16, 2017 this will be our first MdHIMA Annapolis Hill Day: Great opportunity to meet directly with your area representative. Members will have assigned appointments in the James Senate Building, Miller Senate Building and House Office Buildings for this full day event. Look for your updates in the later part of December for signups.
- March 27-28, 2017 - AHIMA Advocacy Summit
- MdHIMA Annual Meeting: Spring 2017. I am working on securing a key member of the Maryland General Assembly as speaker for our Annual MdHIMA Convention with A&C.

Education Committee Update
The Education Committee sponsored two Quarterly Business Meetings this quarter: one in Baltimore at Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital and one in Germantown at Montgomery College. Both were attended to capacity and enjoyed. Since everyone approved of the Saturday meeting, the Education Committee will be considering scheduling more events like this in the future. The committee will be focusing on the new HIM Reimagined with topics on Information Governance, Data Analytics, Quality Review, and Privacy and Compliance. If you have a topic of interest, please contact the committee. The next quarterly business meeting will be held in Annapolis, Maryland on February 3, 2016. Our focus for this meeting is advocacy of the HIM profession with potential meetings of local politicians. The committee is working with our advocacy chair, Vicki Reynolds to make this happen. Look for more updates coming soon.
