The Youth Development Institute had an exciting fall season - settling into our new office near the Downtown Manhattan Fulton Street Transit Hub - kicking off the new program year - and recommitting ourselves to being a resource to the youth development field with our new publication.

We have an on-going desire to see continuous improvement for ourselves and the organizations and institutions we serve. Let us know what you'd like to see in our newsletter.

Thank you to the organizations, institutions, foundations and individuals that have already joined with us to bolster positive youth development throughout NYC.

YOUTH LEADERS LOOK "BACK TO THE FUTURE" AT NYC TRANSFER SCHOOLS!

Since 2013, YDI’s Future Focus initiative has brought youth-led college and career prep to NYC Transfer Schools. The initiative, a partnership with Goddard Riverside, prepares youth to establish their own program for post-secondary planning – both for themselves and their peers.

A new cohort of youth leaders kicked off this year’s program with the theme of “Back to the Future” – setting a solid foundation in the present in order to create positive future outcomes. Over the next several months YDI will work collaboratively with Goddard Riverside to prepare program staff to support youth leaders, and with Youth Leaders to take on the role of peer mentor. They will learn how to facilitate workshops, plan events, and aid their fellow students during the college and career planning process. The program cycle will run throughout the 2016-2017 school year, with students and program staff ready for the mentor program the following school year.

Future Focus enables youth to become active change agents, creating a true sense of ownership and community. Stay tuned for updates on the impact of our newest cohort of Youth Leaders!

YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW COHORT

MYCL Yotuh
YDI welcomes the new 2016-2017 cohort of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC). This cohort, with youth ages 15-19, has 20 members that come from schools across all five boroughs. The youth are diligently working with YDI to launch some exciting new ventures in the coming year; stay tuned!
Do you know a young adult that would be a great addition to MYLC? Contact Dennis Carter at dcarter@ydinstitute.org to learn how to apply.

DEVELOPING HIGH-QUALITY CAREER INTERNSHIPS

This year YDI sought to document the achievements of CIN – a peer-powered network that provides training and technical assistance to New York City cultural institutions that operate high school internship programs. Working closely with the Network’s long-time coordinator, YDI documented CIN’s founding, structure, core attributes, alignment with our youth development framework and impact. Through interviews with past and current funders, Network members and YDI staff, and review of information from the Network’s long history, YDI created a portrait of CIN as an essential resource to the field of youth practitioners in career internship programs and as a critical tool to build program quality and sustainability and promote the field as a whole. We are excited to release this report to the public, which demonstrates the critical role learning communities have in the development of high-quality youth programming.

Thank you to the Pinkerton Foundation and The Altman Foundation, whose on-going support makes CIN possible. To learn more about CIN, visit the website here.

YDI CHAMPIONS DATA AS A LEARNING TOOL AT AEA CONFERENCE

YDI co-presented at this years’ American Evaluation Association (AEA) Design + Evaluation Conference in Atlanta, Georgia to highlight findings from our recent partnership with Algorhythm, who brought their Youth Development Impact Learning System (YDiLS) to a small cohort of Career Internship Network (CIN) members.

The presentation focused on how the cohort used the YDiLS tool to understand the impact of their programs, and to use that information to reflect on program improvements to best meet the needs of youth they serve.

YDI looks forward to incorporating these same techniques into our own workshops over the coming year to help all of our member organizations build the connection between ongoing data-based internal reflection and continuous improvement.
The Youth Development Institute (YDI) advances the positive development of young people by promoting the principles and practices that enable them to thrive.
