The Georgia Space Working Group is holding its quarterly meeting on December 8, 2016, from 10 AM to Noon in the Electric Cities Conference Room on the 8th Floor of the Centergy Building (75 Fifth Street, Atlanta, GA 30308).  The SWG is working to make 2017 a year of significant accomplishments in space for Georgia-based researchers and companies. Our new Chair, Dr. Jud Ready, Principal Research Engineer at GTRI and Deputy Director of Georgia Tech’s Institute for Materials will be leading the meeting.

As we close out the year, we also want to express our deep appreciation for Professor Bobby Braun’s talent and leadership over the past 3 years. We wish him the best as he assumes duties as the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder. We wish him continued success in his new position and look forward to ways to continue collaborating with him.

NDIA December Breakfast December 7th

Seats are filling up for our December breakfast at the Georgian Club.  Dr. George Nield, Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the FAA, will be the featured speaker.  The Commercial Space Office will be the approving authority for the spaceport license at Spaceport Camden.  The spaceport and the associated economic development that will stem from it may be the biggest economic development in the state’s history, so it is vitally important for us to show Dr. Nield our support.  These are exactly the jobs we want for Georgia: highly educated, highly technical and highly paid.  This is a really big deal for Georgia.

If you have any interest in Georgia aerospace, you will not want to miss this event.  If you have already registered, thank you. If you have not, we hope you will.
We hope to see you on December 7.

Civil Air Patrol Celebrates 75th Anniversary

CIVIL AIR PATROL CELEBRATING 75th Anniversary

CAP was founded Dec. 1, 1941, six days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

CAP anti-submarine coastal patrols flew more than 24 million miles in 18 months, spotting 173 U-boats and attacking 57. They also escorted more than 5,600 convoys and reported 17 floating mines, 36 bodies, 91 ships in distress and 363 survivors in the water.

They also patrolled the country’s borders by air, towed targets for military trainees, spotted forest fires, conducted search and rescue missions, provided disaster relief and emergency transport of people and parts and conducted orientation flights for future pilots.

The mission of the CAP has changed from wartime support to peacetime support. Today, Civil Air Patrol has over 60,000 youth and adult members and focuses on three primary missions: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs and Emergency services
  1. Aerospace Education focuses on two different audiences, the CAP members and the general public.  CAP sponsors workshops showcasing basic aerospace knowledge for teachers and students.
  2. The CAP Cadet program allows young people to progress at their own pace through a 16-step program including aerospace education, leadership training, physical fitness and moral leadership.
  3. Emergency services: CAP has 8,000 aircrew members and 32,000 emergency responders trained to FEMA standards.  Civil Air Patrol volunteers conduct 90 percent of inland search and rescue in the U.S. and operate one of the largest fleets of single –engine piston aircraft in the world.
