Those who 'wheeze & sneeze' should take extra care

We are urging people who experience wheezing and sneezing to take extra care when thunderstorms are forecast, following the tragic outcomes of the recent thunderstorm asthma event in Melbourne.

People who experience significant hay fever and those who have asthma can experience breathing problems when high pollen counts are mixed with thunderstorm conditions.

Our Chairman, Dr Jonathan Burdon AM, says to act quickly if you start to have symptoms such as shortness of breath or wheezing. He also advises that the best way to treat thunderstorm asthma is to avoid it happening by ensuring your asthma is under control and that you follow your written asthma action plan.

Older women still most at risk from asthma

Sadly, asthma can be life-threatening, and it’s older women who are still most at risk. The latest report from the ABS shows that over half (59%) of all deaths due to asthma in 2015 were in women over 55 years, with women aged 75 years and older recording nearly three times (2.7) the number of deaths than men of the same age.

Take the survey on thunderstorm asthma

Asthma Australia have released a short survey so that they can look at ways to support and help people with asthma, following the thunderstorm asthma event in Melbourne.
