Welcome to the Portsmouth Cycle Forum newsletter for January 2016. In this issue we bring you news about our next meeting, our goals for 2016 and lots more.
Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the January 2017 Portsmouth Cycle Forum newsletter.  We have an Open Meeting on Thursday 26 January.

Portsmouth Cycle Forum is a volunteer group, always looking for new people to get involved. You can sign up as a member on our website. Remember we are an independent campaign group and depend entirely on our subscriptions to keep going.

Please read our interim Chair Ian Saunders' New Year message here.

Open Meeting - 26 January

We have a guest speaker from Leicester at our open meeting. OK, not from the football club!

Jan from British Cycling will be telling us about the work they have been doing to transform the city for cycling. As the UK’s first Environment City, the city council has plans to quadruple cycling levels by 2024.  This is being done by a number of programmes, including spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on new infrastructure.

So could this be the reason behind Leicester City’s recent successes?!

The meeting will take place on Thursday 26 January at 7.00pm in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Richmond Building of the University of Portsmouth.

Quietways

We’ve been working with Portsmouth City Council recently to identify Quietway routes to some of our smaller shopping centres. These are intended to encourage people to cycle instead of taking the car to local shops, thus reducing traffic congestion and the pressure on parking places.

There will be a new cycling map published shortly showing them with other cycle routes. We’d like the city council to ensure they are well advertised.

April Open Meeting

Our next open meeting will be on the 20 April. We'll let you know more about the agenda nearer the time!

Flood Defences

As you’ll be aware, there has been work going on to upgrade the flood defences around Portsea Island recently. Work is now mostly complete on the sections at Hilsea Lines and Milton Common.

The next section of work is to be the whole of Stamshaw Promenade between the Mountbatten Centre and Portsbridge, starting this spring. This means a well-used path for walkers and cyclists will be out of use for about 2.5 years. The plan is to divert cyclists to temporary cycle lanes on Northern Parade, and we are asking the city council to make these well-marked, continuous and permanent.

When the work is complete it will provide a wide pathway for walkers, cyclists and other users, with places to wander and stop to take in the view.

AGM and Membership Dues

We’ll be inviting subscribing members of Portsmouth Cycle Forum to our annual general meeting on 16 March. We hope to have a workshop on the Cycling UK mapping tools Roger Geffen talked about at our November meeting.

Membership is due for renewal in March.
