November 2016
Training dance4life peer educators in Zambia

In light of its partnership with dance4life, the Female Health Company facilitated and funded a master training facilitated by Trainer Manager Maya Gokul in Zambia, for 24 enthusiastic peer educators and Family Health Trust/dance4life Zambia staff.

Wonder whether it’s all about FC2 during a training day? Not at all! Topics covered range from participants’ norms and expectations, Values Clarification in Sexual and Reproductive Health, Communication and counselling for Condom Promotion, to factors contributing to the spread of STIs including HIV, and much more!
A special shout out to Nsofwa Sampa, one of the participants who is blind and living positively. She finished the course as a true FC2 champion, motivated to bringing the knowledge to her community and taking it with her in her education outreach activities.

On 1 December 2016, in partnership with Groupe SIDA Geneve, the International AIDS Society (IAS) will host a special WAD event in the lobby of the IAS to raise awareness about HIV for the local community. Red ribbons, male condoms, female condoms provided by FHC, and relevant information about HIV will be distributed during the event. Follow the IAS on WAD and help spread the word starting 1 December #WorldAIDSDay.
Shoutout to James Kato - peer educator from Uganda!

Shout out to James Kato, peer educator at Reproductive Health Uganda! He and his team have drafted their own FC instructions with help of FHC’s freely available education material, and it is just beautiful. Outreach programs with peer educators demonstrating how to use a Female Condom. James is a photographer too, so takes pictures for their social media. Great work, James!

ZIKA Update

The Population Institute published the insightful report ‘Double Trouble’ on the current situation regarding Zika in Latin- and North America (September 2016). Interesting but worrying information includes:
  • As many as 1,65 million childbearing women in Central and South America could become infected with first wave of Zika
  • States in continental US threatened by Zika rank low on reproductive rights and may lack the resources needed to fight Zika + unintended pregnancy is common in many states potentially impacted by Zika
  • Puerto Rico: Current projections: 25% of Puerto Rico’s population will be infected with Zika by the end of the year.
  • Guatemala: lowest rates of contraceptive use in Western Hemisphere. Especially vulnerable is the indigenous population, who already had a 39% unmet need for contraception before Zika.
In addition, CDC has included a very informative page Zika and Sexual Transmission’, including a link to a great resource page that explains the Right Way to Use a Female Condom.
The CDC launches new female condom resource webpage.  Click here to visit the page and to download the “Female Condom Use Fact Sheet”!
#StandUpForYourWomen Zika campaign

On Global Female Condom Day 2016, Female Health Company launched the #StandUpForYourWomen Campaign. This year we didn’t only want to celebrate the female condom, we also wanted to do just that little bit extra to make female condoms more accessible to women in need in Zika-affected countries.
‘Starting Global Female Condom Day, September 16th 2016, Female Health Company will donate 1000 FC2 Female Condoms and will offer a free training with one of our Master trainers to every government who makes at least 100,000 FC2 Female Condoms available in their country to its women to take control over fighting Zika.’
The campaign will officially end December 15, 2016. Email info@fc2femalecondom.com for more information.

* The campaign #StandUpForYourWomen applies to new procurement of FC2 female condoms (minimum of 100,000, starting from September 16th, 2016) only. Countries have to be officially recognized as Zika-affected countries by WHO.

GFCD event Malawi

The Hunger Project in Malawi organized an amazing belated Global Female Condom Day Commemoration on September 30: “Dance4Demand & Access to female condoms for the Youth”. They organized a walk, female condom advocacy and outreach activities, and a Netball Bonanza!
From THP Press Release: ‘The need for female condoms in Malawi cannot be overemphasized.  Women and girls continue to be at greater risk of contracting HIV than their male counterparts (NAC).  Teenage pregnancy is on the increase, now at 29% from 26% in 2010 and the unmet need for contraceptives among married women is still high at 19% despite reducing from 26% in 2010 (MDHS).  In order to reduce these trends, our youth need to be more empowered and be provided with more prevention methods.  The female condom is one such product and currently it remains the only woman-initiated product approved for dual protection from sexually transmitted infections including HIV and unintended pregnancies’
