The Point In Time Count (PIT Count) is an annual census of the homeless population. Numbers from this census are used to contribute to both local and national data.
Across the country, thousands of volunteers survey assigned areas to count and engage people experiencing homelessness to gather numbers and demographics of the community. These results guide federal and local goals and also provide documentation for federal funding opportunities. Thus, its accuracy is so very important.
As a general volunteer for Austin/Travis County, you will be part of a team of no less than three people and be supported by a section Team Lead. Team Leads receive additional training for guiding volunteer teams conducting the Count. On the morning of the Count, expect to engage and survey people experiencing homelessness in a respectful, safe, and impactful way. Previous PIT Count experience is not required, as online and in-person trainings will be offered in the coming weeks.
Volunteers in Austin/Travis County are needed during shifts between 3am and 9am on Saturday, January 28th. If you have a preference as to the area you count in, please register early and make note of it in the space provided in the registration form. In addition, if you are unable to participate in the count, but would like to volunteer in some other capacity for the Point In Time Count, please indicate this in the registration form.
This year we hope to recruit 600 general volunteers, so register now and spread the word about this amazing and important opportunity!
