This service provides FHS faculty members with investigative, news events and advocacy articles from AnnaharAssafirAl Akhbar, Al HayatAl Joumhouria, Al BaladAl MustaqbalAl Shark Al Awsat and The Daily Star.

Highlights & Selected Articles

  • Refugees (7/83 articles) mainly reported on the Lebanese Army’s decision to suspend the construction of Ain al-Hilweh wall. This decision was as a result of the Palestinian factions’ at the camp and other supporting groups’ rejection to the decision of constructing a wall, saying that it contradicts “human rights principles’.
  • Environment (7/83 articles) mostly informed about the ongoing waste crisis in Lebanon mainly in Nabatieyh, south of Lebanon. This section also highlighted different municipalities calling for decentralization in order to solve the waste management issue.
  • Tobacco Related (7/83 articles) covered different activities by the stat-run agency, Régie. This category highlighted Quebec’s implementation of a revamped smoking law, the 9-metre rule. The law states that smokers must stand nine meters away from any opening door, window or air intake of any public or private establishment.

  • Cancer (7/83 articles) informed that mouth cancer rates have reached up to 68% in 20 years as a result of unhealthy lifestyles. This section also discussed a pill (anastrozole) that can prevent cancer, which has been continuously explored by scientists since the 1980's, among other cancer-related articles.
  • HIV/AIDS (7/83 articles) highlighted different related articles to celebrate the World AIDS Day which takes place annually, on the 1st of December. According to the World Health Organization, nearly half of all people with HIV around the globe do not know they are infected.
  • Substance Abuse (7/83 articles) reported on the Third Regional Conference on reducing the risk of drug abuse organized by Menahra, entitled: “reduce harm ensure rights”, among other related articles.
  • Other (7/83 articles) compiled different public health related articles among them, the launching of the 6th edition of the Arab Human Development Report at the American University of Beirut. This section also covered the story of Mohamad Ataoui, a young man who died by a stray bullet in his house at Hay El-Sellooum, among other related articles.

  • Food Safety (7/83 articles) reported on the Ministry of Public Health’s issuing the 97th list of conforming and non-conforming food establishments. 
  • Zika Virus (7/83 articles) informed that Zika-infected babies can develop microcephaly after birth.
  • Patient Safety (7/83 articles) reported on the different accusations between Marjeyoun public hospital and the family of Abdel Rahman Khodor, a 13-year old boy who died 20 days after being treated at the hospital due to a dog bite.
  • Domestic Worker (7/83 articles) reported on an Ethiopian domestic worker who committed suicide by throwing herself from the ninth floor in Chiyah, Beirut. Internal Security Forces were deployed to initiate an investigation on the incident.
  • Domestic Violence (7/83 articles) showcased the work of local NGO, ABAAD, in the protection of women and children against domestic violence.
  • Disability (7/83 articles) provided information about the causes of and intervention for children with cerebral palsy.
  • Child Protection (7/83 articles) shed light on “Raise the Age” campaign which aims at preventing underage marriage in Lebanon. The article provides a special focus on the status of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated K2P Center as a WHO Collaborating Center for Evidence-Informed Policy and Practice, the first of its kind in Lebanon and in the region. 
K2P Center strives to provide policymakers and concerned stakeholders with accessible and optimally packaged products such as Policy Briefs, Briefing Notes, Rapid Response, Evidence and Dialogue Summary, and Media Bite.

The International Development Research Center (IDRC) provided initial funding to initiate the K2P Center.
