Cities United is a national movement of mayors focused on eliminating the violence in our partner cities related to African American men and boys. Cities United is committed to the work of reducing homicides in partner cities by 50%, by the year 2025. Moreover, we are committed to restoring hope to these communities and building pathways to justice, employment, education, and increased opportunities for residents.
Notes from our Executive Director:

Greetings Mayors and Community Builders,

As we move in to 2017, I am reflecting on the past two years and the 1000’s of young black men and boys we have lost to community violence and the 1000’s whose lives have been forever changed by a senseless shooting.

With the uptick in homicides and shootings, we remain steadfast to our mission that

By 2025, more than 500 mayors from across the country will have partnered with community leaders, families, youth, philanthropies, and other stakeholders to implement plans that result in Cities United realizing a 50% national reduction in the violence and violence-related deaths among African American young men and boys ages 14- 24.  And in our belief that African American men and boys matter—they are assets to our families, communities and cities across the country.

We are clear that real public safety means an all-hands-on-deck approach that doesn’t only rely on law and order to make our communities safer. We recognize that opportunity, education, jobs, health, community building and hope are required for all our young people to be safe and succeed in life. With the partnership of mayors and city leaders across the country, we are coming together to make real and lasting change possible.
