A Message from Our Principal

Boy is this fall just rushing by!  We are only two weeks away from our holiday break.  Thank you once again to all of you for such a smooth first quarter of the school year!

On December 16th Mr. Cheek, Mr. Nelson and the Alameda choir will be leading us in our Holiday Sing-Along.  We are going to have the entire student body in the cafeteria so we can celebrate together. This leaves little room for guests so the sing-along is intended for students and teachers only.  Thank you for understanding.

Classroom Concern or Question Procedures
We encourage all families to contact teachers by telephone, email and/or a note requesting a call back whenever a question or concern arises. Your child’s teacher knows each child as an individual and as a group member. If there is a problem or unresolved question, the teacher is the best person to contact for information.
Teachers will sometimes involve the principal, assistant principal and/or other support staff in situations such as serious peer conflicts, behavior problems, counseling needs, chronic bus problems or special academic concerns. Parents may contact either Eryn or me if they still have questions or concerns that have not been resolved AFTER consulting with the child’s teacher, or if there is a serious issue needing our immediate attention.

Connect to Kindergarten
Our Connect to Kindergarten event will be held at Alameda on February 8th at 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM. If you have a child(ren) starting kindergarten in the fall of 2017 please come to our Connect to Kindergarten event for some great information, a tour of the school and an introduction to the kindergarten teachers.  Please pass this information along to any of your friends and neighbors living in the Alameda attendance area.

School Climate Forum: Fostering a Safe, Supportive Environment at Alameda

Wednesday, December 7 | 7-8 p.m.

Next week's general assembly PTA meeting will be a town hall type forum with a panel that will include our assistant principal, Eryn Berg, our school counselor, Roxanne Davidson, second grade teacher, Kayla Tracy, and Rick Kirschmann the Assistant Director-School Climate and Discipline from the PPS Office of Equity and Partnerships.

The focus of this meeting will be our "school climate." We'll hear about Alameda’s “school climate” goals, SOAR, and the plans to work toward those goals. We'll learn about the district's expectations and role in this work, how it might impact behavior interventions and how we as parents can best support and reinforce the implementation of our new school climate plan.

In advance of the meeting we encourage you to review Alameda's new School Climate Handbook.

Please bring your questions and join us from 7-8 p.m. in the school library.
All Alameda families are encouraged to attend.
PTA membership is not a requirement for attendance.

Passport Club Update:

We need volunteers!

Yesterday we had our first Passport Club check. There was an enthusiastic crowd of 2nd through 5th graders, but not quite enough volunteers to manage it all. Please consider volunteering for the Passport Club! We ideally need as many as 25 volunteers per session. Each "passport check" runs from 8:50am - 11:00am in the cafetorium and it’s a really fun way to interact with our great Alameda 2nd-5th graders. We have a blast!

Our next check is on December 16. If you can help, please sign up online.

For more information about the club and preparing your child for the montly checks, please visit our web page.

One week left to register your Alameda BOB team!

Please have one parent or guardian complete the online registration on behalf of the team no later than December 8. We will not accept any more team registrations after December 8 so please be sure to complete the process as soon as possible.

After you have completed the online registration, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to finalize your team payment and paperwork with the BOB team.

Season of Giving

Food insecurity is a struggle for many, especially here in Oregon where 1 in 5 neighbors face hunger. Our Alameda PTA has identified several ways we as a community can help:
  1. Purchase and donate gift cards to grocery stores for families in need. Purchase and drop off your donated gift cards in the donation box in the school office by Friday, December 16. Our PTA will work with the local SUN School Program to see that the gift cards reach our fellow PPS families who are most in need. While any gift cards are welcome, we recommend selecting stores where shopping dollars go farther (Albertson's, Fred Meyer, Safeway). Any amount is fine. And remember, if you purchase the gift cards via SCRIP you’ll also be supporting Alameda!

  2. Volunteer at one of the many local organizations working to fight hunger in our community. Two great organizations that allow children (with adults) to volunteer include the Oregon Foodbank and the Backpack Lunch Program. So why not make it a family outing or gather a group of friends and have some fun while helping others!

Book Fair Success!

Together we purchased over $15,500 in Scholastic books, including more than $850 in books for the library at our sister school, Rigler! Because of these purchases, Scholastic will provide Alameda with more than $8,500 to spend on our library through the Scholastic Dollars program.

Thank you to all who made purchases at our Scholastic Book Fair! And a special thank you to the volunteers who made this possible, including Carrie Wheadon, Nikki Lee, Deena Raphael, Liz Koopmann, Jackie Partch, Jennifer Gross, Jen Korbich, Julia Greenfield, Kristin Pepper, Manuel, Katherine Hart, Devani Scheidler, Sarah Craig, Katie O'Dell, Linda Van Deusen-Price, Elizabeth Ezetta, Roberta Pietrok and Taisiya Smith!

LOST & FOUND ITEMS IN THE OFFICE

Several found items have been turned into the office. These include: black framed glasses, set of two door keys, a small girls black pleather jacket, and a very small silver ring with a pink stone in it. If these belong to you, please pick them up before winter break or they will be discarded.
