Welcome to the weekly Newsletter for parents and carers of students attending John Hanson Community School.

Inspire - Care - Succeed
We have two vacancies for parent governors on our school’s governing body.  John Hanson Community School has always aimed for a partnership with parents/carers which undoubtedly brings great benefits to the young people.  One of the most significant ways you can help in promoting this aim is to volunteer to be a parent governor.

The governing body's main tasks are:
  • to ensure that the school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • to hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students;
  • to oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
Parent governors are welcomed as valued members of the team and play a vital role in ensuring the governing body is aware of the views of parents/carers and the local community. We feel sure that there are parents and carers who are prepared to take on this important role and give their time and commitment to helping us to continue to improve the school's performance.

In looking to fill this vacancy, the governors of the school have identified the following skills, experience and attributes that they feel would help strengthen the governing body:
  • financial planning and control
  • social work / child welfare
  • monitoring performance / quality assurance
  • HR / personnel / recruitment
  • law
Training and support will be available to help you develop into the role. This will include in-house mentoring and support, as well as access to external governor training from Hampshire County Council.

The role of a school governor would involve each half term:
  • Attending two meetings at school on a Wednesday evening between 5:30pm and 7:30pm
Throughout the year:
  • Attending Parents’ Evenings and other events as a representative of the governors
  • Making one or two visits during the school day to visit a link faculty to meet with the staff and understand how the faculty is developing
Should you want to know more about the role, do make contact with the Sara Falk the Chair of Governors via the Clerk to the Governors, sarah.kitching@jhanson.hants.sch.uk

If you would like to put yourself forward as a Parent Governor please contact the main school office either in person, by phone or e-mail (adminoffice@jhanon.hants.sch.uk) for an application form which will need to be completed and returned to the school by 12.00 noon on Friday 16 December 2016.

If there are more that two applications, we will hold an election in the New Year and you will be sent a voting paper in due course.

In the company of trees

A group of eight year 7 students spent a day tree planting at Harmony Woods this week.  This is part of an annual tree planting programme.  The group were joined by a group of infant school children and together they managed to help them plant their trees, plant their own tree and plant 25 whips back at the school ready for next year.

Thankfully the group managed to stay reasonably warm in the sun considering the frost!

Homework update

I am delighted to share with all parents and students the letter I received on Wednesday about the hard work our students have been putting in with maths homework since the start of the year.

Dear Mr Thain,

Today is a special day for the students at John Hanson. Our records are showing us that the students in your school have now answered over 200,000 questions on our HegartyMaths program. This is a truly fantastic achievement and I wanted to personally send my congratulations to you, your staff and your students on their commitment to hard work.

We have done a little bit of an analysis of your data and would like to give a special mention to the student who got your school over the threshold and answered the 200,000th question. This student is a dedicated worker, who has shown true commitment to hard work! She has already clocked up over 13 hours on our site and worked through almost 500 questions! Please pass on my personal congratulations to Veniana Nakacia. We look forward to your next milestone.

Best regards,

Colin Hegarty

This is a really wonderful surprise, and shows the outstanding attitude of our students towards their homework, and the value that they are attaching to it.  Massive congratulations to Veniana for being the one that hit the milestone, but also to all the students across the school who are working so hard to improve their maths.

Mike Thain

Head of Mathematics Faculty
