There's always something good happening in downtown Wilkes-Barre!
December 6 - December 12, 2016
It's going to be another busy and festive December week in Downtown Wilkes-Barre!

It's all focused on Public Square, the site of our center city's latest December event: the City of Wilkes-Barre's first annual Old-Fashioned Holiday Market. Discover gifts from a wide variety of arts and craft vendors, check out the full musical performance schedule on both Friday and Saturday, and on Friday, experience a horse-drawn carriage ride - all while you enjoy the Square's beautiful Christmas tree and festive decor!

Interested in a concert? Wilkes University's performing ensembles offer three different options this week: the Jazz Orchestra's Thursday-evening concert at the Darte Center; the Choral Ensemble's Friday night performance at the First Presbyterian Church; and the Civic Band's presentation of a variety of holiday favorites (with highlights from the Marching Colonels) at the Darte Center on Sunday afternoon.

Or, consider a show at the F.M. Kirby Center. This week, there are three different ones to choose from: the Mavericks' holiday concert on Thursday night; Kacey Musgraves' "Very Kacey Christmas" tour on Friday; and Joe Nardone's Holiday Doo-Wop Extravaganza on Saturday evening.

And, of course, you can always catch the latest releases at Movies 14 (check out Bargain Tuesdays!); grab something to eat at the Valley's widest variety of restaurants; tackle some of that holiday shopping at some of our many fine retailers; explore Downtown's museums and galleries; or gaze at the beauty of Public Square's painted holiday windows and seasonal lights - all within a short stroll. Remember: when it comes to the holidays, all you need is Downtown.

Hoping to see you soon in Downtown Wilkes-Barre!

This Week in Downtown Wilkes-Barre is brought to you by the following organizations:

Walk Wilkes-Barre:

This week's historic building is:

Lehigh Valley Coal Company (King’s College Administration Building)
133 North River Street (1913)

The King’s College administration building was built as the corporate headquarters of the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, one of eight major coal operators dominating the anthracite industry at the turn of the century. The Classical Revival structure was authored by Graham, Anderson, Probst, & White – a Chicago firm founded by Daniel H. Burnham, the great American architect who had previously designed the Miners Bank Building elsewhere in Downtown – to complement its parkside setting opposite the Luzerne County Courthouse. Forty years later, in 1953, King’s College, which had been founded seven years earlier by the Congregation of the Holy Cross, purchased the structure to serve as the initial building of a new campus. The landmark 24-foot high aluminum “Christ the King” statue atop the building was installed in 1956 to the designs of local sculptor Lawrence Russo.
