Mingalaba! Hello!
Build a School in Burma (BSB) has exciting news to share about the school being built in Burma honoring Dr. Hugh O'Brodovich. Your generosity is making this possible -- thank you!
Sathila K-8 Monastic School will be constructed in a village near Shwebo, about an hour and a half drive from Mandalay. Unlike public schools, monastic schools do not charge fees and, therefore, educate the poorest students in Burma.
BSB will partner with Paung Da Oo Monastery in Mandalay to build Dr. Hugh's school. The Abbot, U Nayaka, is widely considered to be a leading expert on education in Burma. Paung Da Oo schools use student-centered teaching, which has proved to be more effective to actual learning than the traditional rote system used in the public schools.
In mid-January, the founders of BSB will visit Paung Da Oo, Shwebo's School Committee, and U Nayaka. We will forward another update with photos after that visit. We expect it to be completed before the new school year commences in June 2017.
BSB built five schools in 2016. We hope to build 7-8 in 2017, our most ambitious goal to date. To learn more about Build a School in Burma or to make a donation, please visit our website.
Thank you for your support . . . and may your winter holidays be merry and your 2017 be filled with joy.
Warmly,
Cathryn Thurow for Build a School in Burma
