Remembering Judy Davis
Notable Midlands activist and philanthropist Judy Davis passed away on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016, following an extended illness.
Davis joined the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness’ Executive Committee in September 2015 and was voted Education and Workforce Task Force co-chair.
“Judy was a mentor, confidante, and role model to many of us in the Midlands and across the state,” said Council President and CEO Ann Marie Stieritz. “I was fortunate to be among those who served with her in the community and learned from her in both my professional and personal life.” Read more>>

Ann Marie Stieritz, Council president and CEO, participated in a community convening on Nov. 9, 2016, at “The Future of Learning: Preparing Students with 21st Century Skills,” hosted by Alaska: Education Matters, Inc., in Anchorage. Dickerson presents at Auto Council Supply Chain Visibility meeting
Suzanne Dickerson, the Council’s director of logistics industry initiatives, presented at the South Carolina Automotive Council’s Supply Chain Visibility meeting on Nov. 10, 2016, at Trident Technical College in North Charleston.
Dickerson spoke about South Carolina’s logistics industry’s impact on economic growth, the importance of investing in infrastructure and transportation, and the opportunities and challenges facing South Carolina’s logistics industry and the other industries that rely on its services. Cameron represents Council at Upstate aerospace event
Deborah Cameron, director of aerospace initiatives for the Council, served as part of a three-person panel discussion at GSA Business Report's November Power Series event on Nov. 3, 2016. The event focused on the future of aerospace in the Palmetto State, specifically in the Upstate, where nearly 40 percent of the state's aerospace-related companies are located. Keynote speaker to address impact of changing demographics on educational leadership

Dr. James H. Johnson, Jr., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will give then morning keynote address at TransformSC's Spring Conference in Greenville. He will discuss “Disruptive Demographics” and the changing face of our country, region and state as well as addressing what those changes mean for transformative educational leadership.
Dr. Johnson is the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of strategy and entrepreneurship and director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Competency-based progression institute draws national experts
TransformSC hosted national experts in Competency-Based Progression at the Brookland Banquet and Conference Center in West Columbia on Tuesday, November 15. Speakers included Karla Phillips, policy director for competency-based education at the Foundation for Excellence in Education, Virgel Hammond, chief learning officer at KnowledgeWorks, and Lauren McCauley from the SC Department of Education's Office of Transformation. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in learning and design labs facilitated by KnowledgeWorks as part of the day-long workshop.

The South Carolina Council on Competitiveness has received a federal grant to develop the state’s logistics industry cluster. The $175,000 investment from the United States Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration will partially fund the Council’s initiative to strengthen and develop the state’s logistics industry.
SC Aerospace convened industry leaders on October 4 at the new Greenville Tech Center for Manufacturing Innovation. The program featured a presentation on aerospace metals given by SC Aerospace Advisory board member Hunter Dalton, offering both a history and predictions for the future of metals in the aerospace industry.

Steve Prout of Solar Atmospheres, Todd Sharpley of GKN, and Paul V. Kumler of KTM Solutions have joined the Advisory Board for SC Aerospace.
TransformSC hosted its first annual Bus Tour on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016. Business leaders, community leaders and policymakers traveled to four schools in the Midlands region to see the difference that innovative education models are making in classrooms.

TransformSC has accepted five schools and two districts to its statewide network of innovative schools. The new TransformSC schools are located across the state: Monarch Elementary School (Greenville) Swansea High School Freshman Academy (Swansea), Bates Middle School (Sumter), Hartsville High School (Hartsville) and R.B. Stall High School (Charleston). Lexington County School District 4 in the Midlands and Cherokee County School District in the Upstate are joining as complete districts.
