Thanks for coming to our AGM!

New Options for Leave from Work
The federal government launched an online consultation for considering two new options for eligible Canadians on leave from work to care for a newborn or a newly adopted child, in addition to the current possibility option of a combined 12 months of maternity and parental benefits. In response, the Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada and 25 community and labour organizations have sent a joint letter expressing concerns with current federal consultations on parental leave.
New National Children's Advocacy Group
According to UNICEF's global index, Canada has been rated 17th out of 29 affluent nations for children's wellbeing. In wake of this report, Children First Canada, a new non-profit launched in November. Its aims to "improve children's wellbeing by building greater awareness among Canadians about the urgent needs of kids in our country, and mobilizing government, lawmakers and influencers to change the status quo."

7th Annual Conference on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

March 1-4, 2017 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC. This advanced level conference continues to bring together experts from multiple disciplines to share international research. From the pure science, to prevention, diagnosis and intervention across the lifespan, the conference will address the implications of this research and promote scientific/community collaboration.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis Presentation: Save the Date!
Dr. Paul Roumeliotis is a pediatrician and public health leader, with a specific interest and focus on early child development support and its effects over the course of a lifetime. He'll join us with Kelly Stone, Executive Director of FRP Canada, for a discussion of his book "Baby comes home" and the role of family support in child health promotion. Save the date!

Research: What We're Reading
Canadian Index of Wellbeing: 2016 National Report
 
Among the calls from the 2016 National Report are a focus on an “upstream” approach for health promotion including "a range of community-based health and social supports and helps reduce pressure on the primary health care system." While not mentioned specifically, family resource programs provide this kind of "upstream" health promotion.
2016 BC Child Poverty Report Card
 
First Call has just released the 2016 BC Child Poverty Report Card. Highlights from the report include:
  • 1 in 5 children are in poverty;
  • children under 6 are the most likely to be in poverty than other children and than the general population;
  • children make up 1/3 of food bank users; and
  • most poor children live with parents in the work force.
