Eastern Edge Gallery met with Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development Christopher Mitchelmore today in advance of Bill 56’s third reading in the House of Assembly this afternoon.
While we appreciated the opportunity and time to bring our concerns directly to the Minister, we feel the meeting itself was unproductive. During this meeting, we brought forward concerns regarding the potential restructuring of the Provincial Art Gallery, its impact for artists in our community, the haste in which this Bill has been pushed through, and the lack of public and expert consultation. We feel that the Minister’s response was inadequate for it lacked clarity and no evidence was cited to support these changes.
We urge our members to continue writing to their respective MHA’s and if possible to attend the House of Assembly right now to bare witness to the proceedings re Bill 56.
We will endeavor to keep you all as updated as we can as events unfold.
Sincerely Eastern Edge Gallery
Philippa Jones (Interim Director)
Alex Noel (Chair)
