New LCAP Resources + Lawndale Elementary School District

California Food Policy Advocates recently released a kit of resources to demonstrate how the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) can be leveraged to support nutrition. These new resources serve as a starting point for school districts to identify ways to include wellness into their Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

Lawndale Elementary School District (LESD) is one of the districts already supporting nutrition and academic achievement with LCFF. LESD included promotion of health and wellness as a goal within their LCAP and funded a food service/wellness liaison at each school to promote wellness and encourage healthy choices for students and their families. Get the full scoop plus read other LCAP stories to discover how California school districts have already incorporated nutrition actions into their LCAP.

School Meal Programs Innovate to Improve Student Nutrition

The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently released a report, School Meal Programs Innovate to Improve Student Nutrition, shedding light on which approaches have been most effective in the multiyear transition to healthier food and drink standards in schools. The report highlights the importance of more than just providing food; there is a need to view the school nutrition environment as an eating establishment that includes nutrition promotion and education with student engagement through taste testing and school nutrition events.
