Get Ready to Celebrate "Chanukkah at Chome"!
Stories, Blessings, Songs and Recipes Available to Enhance Your Family Celebration, Saturday, December 24 - Saturday, December 31

As a resource for CBH partners, the Bet Haverim website features an entire page of Hanukkah information to add light to your holiday!  Click here to access a deeper appreciation of Hanukkah's meaning and the many options for fun and memorable celebrations for all age groups.

But Make Time to Celebrate "Chanukkah With Your Chaverim," Too
Add the Light of Your Family, Committee, Group or Havurot
to Our Nightly Community Hanukkiah Lighting

Each night at 6:00 p.m. during Hanukkah, CBH committees, groups, havurot and families are invited to each take a turn ensuring that our large-scale, handcrafted, forged metal hanukkiah is illuminated in the Redwood Grove.  The commitment is 30 minutes or less, and you're encouraged to invite as many friends and family members as you wish to take part.  Large diameter candles will be provided, as well as a copy of the blessings.  Sign-up, bring your own matches or lighter and allow the time spent sharing the holiday with your community be your own personal Hanukkah blessing.  All CBH partners are invited to take part in the candle lighting each night at 6:00 p.m., regardless of whether or not they are part of the group that is responsible for the hanukkiah that evening.

Presented to CBH last December by our friends at Adat Or Israel, a community of Spanish-speaking & bilingual Jews in Santa Maria, CA, this unique hanukkiah was made by a congregant's father in Mexico, in appreciation of our gift of a Torah to Adat Or Yisrael when we finished scribing a new Torah to mark our 50th anniversary in Decemeber 2012.  Learn more about CBH's special relationship with Adat Or Israel

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS/DEADLINES
Board of Directors' Notes
Tuesday, December 6, 2016 Meeting

Assisted by CBH partner Joy Cohan, Board member Jodi Liederman presented the budget and concept for the major annual Spring fundraiser, scheduled for Sunday, May 21, 2017.  It will be themed as a Bat Mitzvah for our campus, as the 13th anniversary of the move is in 2017.  The Board approved the budget, enabling plans to move forward.

Board member Bimla Schwarz shared a synagogue-wide organizational chart she has developed showing major areas of administrative and program focus and the staff and/or volunteers responsible for each.  This will be used to help the Board better assess strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.  It was also announced that Nancy Lazarus is the new chair of the Adult Education Committee.

An Israeli Dance Group headed by Meryl Rappaport was approved and will begin to meet on the third Wednesday of each month, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Social Hall.

A proposal from Rabbi Seth Castleman to enhance and innovate CBH programming in several categories was considered.  The Board will continue to discuss the proposal at the January meeting.

The next regular Board of Directors' meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, 7:00 p.m., at CBH.  For more information at any time about the CBH Board of Directors, or to contact individual Board officers or members, please see

Giving Tuesday Campaign at Bet Haverim
Nearly $1,500 Now Generously Donated by CBH Partners Toward the $5,400 Goal

While hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised worldwide during past Giving Tuesday campaigns, Bet Haverim has set a rather modest goal of $5,400 to benefit synagogue operations for our first-ever Giving Tuesday effort, which began last week and continues through Saturday, December 24, the first night of Hanukkah.

Please help to make this a true season of light for our Jewish community!  Click here to donate via PayPal, Visa or MasterCard , and select from the following gift options, each representing an offset of operational expenses at CBH during 2016-2017:

  • $36 buys supplies for a Haverim K'tanim/Young Families activity
  • $72 buys challah for Shabbat and Sunday School for two weeks
  • $108 keeps the lights on in the Social Hall for a month
  • $360 sends a child to Religious School or Hebrew School who otherwise cannot afford to enroll
  • $540 brings a special speaker or musician for an evening or weekend
  • $720 provides security personnel for the High Holy Days
  • A gift to your community of any amount!

Make your gift extra meaningful by contributing in honor or in memory of a loved one.

Should you prefer to donate via check, please deliver your donation to the CBH office before December 24, and include "Giving Tuesday" in the memo.

Questions about the campaign?  Please contact

Make a Legacy Commitment This Fall or Winter and help CBH to Earn a $2,500 Grant

This Fall, one CBH legacy donor, or pair of donors, will be profiled each week.  Barbara Anderson, this week shares her view of legacy giving as a reciprocal commitment to Bet Haverim.  Throughout the years, Barbara has been active with a variety of CBH committees and activities.  Each Fall, she is the catalyst behind the production of the Yizkor Booklet, which adds meaning to our High Holy Days observances.

“I made a commitment to leave a legacy gift to Congregation Bet Haverim, because the congregation made a commitment to me when it welcomed me as a Jew, giving me a spiritual home and a sense of 'rootedness.'  That is a gift that has kept on giving, which is what I hope my legacy gift will do.”

See a full list of the more than 50 CBH Legacy Donors by clicking here.  To create your Jewish legacy, contact Michael Bobell, CBH Life and Legacy Coordinator, by clicking his name, or by phoning 530-400-7031.  The commitment deadline to assist with CBH's incentive grant eligibility is Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

ADULT EDUCATION, SPIRITUALITY
AND ISRAEL PROGRAMMING
THIS SUNDAY, December 11, 2016

Israel Peace Alternatives Presents:
"Gett:  The Trial of Vivian Amsalem" Film Screening and Discussion with May Pundak of the New Israel Fund
2:00 - 5:00 p.m., Social Hall

In Israel, rites of passage—including conversion, marriage, and divorce—are the sole domain of the Orthodox Rabbinate. To divorce, part of that process involves a gett (the document that releases a wife from marriage).  In order to obtain a gett and finalize a divorce, some Jewish women have been compelled to give up parental rights or pay large sums of money.

Join IPA for the only Sacramento-area screening of this celebrated film, which tells the story of one woman’s pursuit of a gett, followed by a presentation and conversation with the New Israel Fund’s May Pundak, an Israeli civil rights attorney and activist.

Pundak will offer insights into the state of marriage and divorce in Israel, as well as a new campaign by NIF’s New Generations (young adult group) calling on Israel to enact legislation guaranteeing marriage equality in Israel.

To learn
about the screening at CBH, the film and related topics, please click here.   CBH Partner Sarah Pattison also can assist by clicking her name, or phoning 530-220-5042.  The screening is free of charge and open to the public.

10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Library

Do you have childhood memories of hearing Yiddish?  Are you curious about Yiddish in Jewish culture?  This group of approximately 10 welcomes new members, and functions in a "book group" format, sharing copies of stories, songs and jokes in Yiddish, that are then translated and discussed in English.

It is ideal for participants to know the Hebrew alefbet before attending, however, help is available for those needing assistance.  This is NOT a drop-in group; regular attendance on the second and fourth weeks of the month is necessary in order to build skills from one meeting to the next.  Please contact Zipi Mor at
em4mezp@hotmail.com or 530-792-8917 if you plan to join the group, or if you need additional details.
