Zaytoun December newsletter

Wishing all our customers a wonderful Christmas, if you are celebrating, and if not, then we wish you a joyful festive season with family and friends. If you're around London, we are opening our office on 14th December from 10am till 4pm so you can pop in to say hello and pick up last minute Zaytoun gifts! Email us to let us know you're coming in.

Festive Dates Donation

Zaytoun dates
We have in stock around 5 tons of the 250g date packs, which we brought in for Christmas but are sadly not able to sell through to retail outlets.

The dates are delicious to eat and we would love to share them over the festive period with community groups, food banks, homeless shelters or refugees, but we need your help!

We are unsure that this batch will last as long on shop shelves as it is supposed to. Because we cannot risk damage to the Zaytoun brand and Palestinian produce, we would rather ensure that the batch is all sold before Christmas.

We are happy to donate fruit and are asking for your help to suggest groups to send it to and to cover the costs of transporting the dates.

Sending 9 cases (6*250g) dates in a parcel will cost £15. Or 50 cases plus can go on a pallet for £60.

Please do let us know if you have groups who would like to receive dates by emailing us.

We have also found various charities to donate fruit to and would welcome donations to cover transport on those. We will report back to you in the January newsletter to let you know how much we managed to distribute.

Donations for post/ transport can sent via
  • Paypal (order@zaytoun.org)
  • Bank transfer to account number 20000812, sort code 16 58 10
  • Cheque made out to Zaytoun CIC, sent to Zaytoun CIC, 1 Gough Square, London. EC4A 3DE.
Please reference your payment "Dates donation".
Zaytoun Palestinian Christmas hamper

Share a piece of Palestine this Christmas!

This Festive season as we celebrate and navigate the shops and family gatherings, we're inviting you to remember the farmers in Palestine and consider giving the delicious gift of Palestinian produce to your friends, family and colleagues.

It's a gift that gives twice.  Every product purchased shares the Palestinian story and supports the farming communities who work steadfastly throughout the year, under occupation and apartheid, cut off from their families and farms by the separation wall.

If you're buying for lots of friends, you can order our products in bulk from online ethical retailer Premcrest. If you'd prefer to buy a single bottle of oil, or one or two packets of our other products, check out our range on Traidcraft.

The beautiful cookbook by Joudie Kalla 'Palestine on a Plate', and hampers of our products are also available from Traidcraft and Premcrest, and the Ethical Shop is offering a Zaytoun gift box.

To find our products on your high street, check our stockist pages, and our events page for local stalls in the run-up to Christmas.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2017

Fairtrade Fortnight 2017

Fairtrade Fortnight, the annual celebration of all things Fairtrade in the UK, runs next year from 27 February until 12 March. To mark the fortnight, we are partnering with development organisations Think Global, the Cooperative College and Waterford One World Centre, to offer talks by our visiting Palestinian producer.

The partnership covers the London boroughs, North-West England and the Waterford area in the Republic of Ireland. If you're in one of those areas and would like to host, or attend an event, please do get in touch.

In other areas, our director Taysir Arbasi can attend events to share stories from the farming community in Palestine who are supported by Fairtrade. We are already planning events in several towns and cities and will update the list in next month's newsletter. Please do email us if you would like to know of events in your area, or are interested to host an event.

JAI Tree Planting tour

2017 tree planting tour

Many of you have been asking us if we run tree planting tours in Palestine. For 2017, we have chosen the tour organised by the Joint Advocacy Initiative, taking place 4-13 February.
JAI is a joint program of East Jerusalem YMCA and YWCA of Palestine, working for peace with justice in Palestine, based on humanitarian and Christian values, by mobilizing the world movements of YMCA and YWCA, churches, church-based organizations, UN agencies, and other relevant organizations to influence decision-makers and prompt actions that contribute to end Israeli occupation and all its violations of international law.

On an international level, the JAI seeks to raise awareness, by providing accurate information and updates, then involves people in prompting practical actions & activities through their running or strong involvement in campaigns and initiatives. On the local level, the JAI trains youth in advocacy mechanisms, and is involved in coalitions, networks and popular activates with other local organizations to unify the Palestinian message.

Palestine news

The prospect of a boycott on settlement produce extending to a boycott, divestment and sanctions on businesses that trade in or with settlements is worrying Israel, according to this article, because the Israeli economy is bound up with the settlement economy.

Israeli support for the annexation of the illegal Ma'ale Adumim settlement would mean that Israel achieve territorial continuity all the way to Jerusalem and spark international condemnation.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign are running a settlement campaign - write to your MP and join the calls to demand the UK government takes decisive and effective action against Israel in order to stop the ongoing land grab.
