Winter pressures & 4-hour performance
Our hospitals have been on ‘black’ alert on two occasions in the last fortnight; such is the pressure on our emergency services.
NUH and the Notts health and social care system is already working with the Emergency Care Improvement Programme (ECIP) to implement the necessary system-wide changes required to bring a step-change to 4-hour performance. This includes more primary care clinicians working in our Emergency Department (ED), and all partners working to provide a range of out-of-hospital care that meets the needs of our patients.
We recently opened a new unit at QMC to improve the timeliness and expertise of assessment of our elderly emergency care patients. We are continuously improving the effectiveness and consistency of our clinical decision-making and the processes that move emergency patients from ED, through our hospitals and to discharge.
The Trust welcomes the opportunity to work with NHS Improvement and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and is absolutely determined to accelerate and build on the improvements in our 4-hour performance we have seen in recent months.
On 6-8 December, NUH had an unannounced inspection from the CQC focussing on the Emergency Pathway. We expect the report to be published in the coming months and will use the findings to further improve the experience for patients who require urgent and emergency care in our hospitals.
