Pressure: Making Good Decisions Quickly in Real World Mental Health Settings

December 15, 2016
Herberman Conference Center, Pittsburgh, Pa

Making challenging ethical decisions quickly, consistently and correctly is a great challenge for front line clinicians. Traditional academic approaches to medical ethics may not offer timely or satisfactory resolution of these problems; decisions often need to be made in seconds or minutes and cannot wait until the next day for an ethics consult or second opinion. The language of medical ethics does not always lend itself to practical decision making; post-structuralist andfeminist ethical theory may well have illuminating perspectives on power and coercion, but this does little to aid the clinician deciding when to release a person from restraints. Clinicians, especially in high acuity settings need a framework for rapid, practical ethical problem solving. Particular attention will be paid to understanding duties to third parties (i.e., “Tarasoff Duties”) and malpractice risk management.

SOCIAL WORKERS AND LICENSURE:
  1. Social workers must complete three credits of ethics training by the end of 2016 for their licensure renewal in Feb. 2017. This is necessary for all renewal cycles.
  2. As a condition of renewal, social workers must complete 2 hours of Department of State/Board approved continuing education in child abuse recognition and reporting within the required renewal period (24 month period). This is Act 31 and is necessary for all renewal cycles. Find more information here.
  3. Act 74 was passed in July 2016. This requires professionals to get one hour of training in assessing and treating suicide. Social workers will begin this mandated requirement with the next licensure cycle (Feb. 2017-December 2019). Psychologists must complete this during this current renewal cycle. Find more information here.

The STAR-Center's 30th Anniversary - Research Symposium is designed for mental health and primary care practitioners to provide the most current information offered by the international leaders in the field of youth suicide. The symposium focuses on the causes of youth suicide, the best ways to assess risk, and a review of the latest evidence-based treatment and prevention approaches.
