Year 13 Psychology trip
A-Level Psychology students visited Bethlem Museum of the Mind on a recent trip.
All students participated in a session on the history of mental health and the hospital (the original Bedlam).
They learned about the different ways people with mental health issues have been treated over the years and looked at forensic patients and how they were treated.
They also learned about the expansion of the hospital which is now part of the Maudsley Trust and how it started in the Liverpool Street Station building eventually finding its way to its current location in Beckenham.
Students could explore the museum and artefacts related to mental health.
They observed art created by patients as part of their treatment programme and were told the story of a piece of art entitled ‘the maze’ in which the patient used art to communicate his feelings of desolation to doctors.
Another session involved students making decisions about patients being allowed to leave the hospital for weekend leave.
They were given a variety of different sources to help make choices such as comments from patients and family, the Mental Health Act and laws surrounding sectioning.
Comments from students included:
"The visit was interesting, especially when looking at 'the maze' and case studies of people with mental health issues."
"I thought the trip was really valuable as we were able to experience and learn about treatment of mental health in its very early days, up until the present day. I particularly enjoyed learning about the artwork of patients."
