Representing you on the Seattle City Council is a great honor and I treasure every day of it. I worked this year to build a compassionate and safe community for all of us irrespective of income or neighborhood. Here are some of the ways my office achieved this in 2016. Addressing the Crisis of Homelessness: Pathways Home and the Bridging the Gap Interim Action Plan

This year I supported Pathways Home, Seattle’s strategic plan to transform our homelessness services system, and the Bridging the Gap Interim Action Plan, designed to help keep unsheltered people safe and to improve Seattle’s response to environmental concerns in neighborhoods. Seattle needs both, and I am proud to have supported increased investment in rapid rehousing and diversion from our homelessness services system, expanded emergency shelters, four new sanctioned encampments, and $200,000 for storage of belongings at low-barrier shelters.

Addressing Drug Addiction

In October Seattle and King County’s Taskforce on Heroin and Opioid Addiction released their recommendations to address our region’s growing crisis.  I championed $105,000 a year to support the expansion of medically assisted treatment services at the Public Health Clinic in Belltown, starting us down the path of implementing these critical steps to address this growing epidemic in our community.

Protecting Our Communities from Gun Violence

This year I included $110,000 in the budget to create and implement uniform protocols across the city and county to mandate the forfeiture of firearms from domestic violence perpetrators who have been served protection orders. This will be essential in implementing HB 1840 and the recently passed I-1491. Working with the City Attorney and our King County Prosecuting Attorney, we will provide a new option for law enforcement and family members to petition courts to remove firearms from a home BEFORE a bad situation becomes worse.

Gender Equity

In August I co-hosted a symposium on Paid Family Leave to consider what the city of Seattle and Washington State can do to bring paid family leave to all our workers. State and city elected officials, academics, advocacy groups, labor organizations, policy analysts and business representatives joined together to discuss nationwide best practices, evidence supporting the benefits of paid family leave, the workers’ needs, and the hurdles employers face.

Seattle Center Visioning

I am pleased to be supporting the efforts to plan for the future of Seattle Center, one of Seattle and District 7’s greatest public spaces. We have brought stakeholders from Seattle Public Schools, the City of Seattle, the Uptown neighborhood, non-profits, Arts & Culture, and other civic leaders to plan an updated future for this incredible space.

Pedestrian & Bicycle Connections in District 7

As I ride my E-bike around town, I see how far we have come in establishing a safe and connected bike network for all ages and abilities. I also know how much farther we must go. I am proud to be supporting efforts such as Market to MOHAI to create safe and connected pedestrian connections through our District, creating unique connections to the anchors of our community.

District 7 on the Rise

The new City Council district system has created important opportunities for a renewed focus on our unique neighborhoods. In this budget, I championed investing in the creation of a Business Improvement area for Belltown, an effort known as Project Belltown. Please contact me to schedule a meeting during my District Office Hours here or with your neighborhood organization to discuss your concerns and vision for our community.

Voter Fueled Impact!

Lastly, to the voters across the city and region and state, I say thank you for supporting very important measures including the Housing Levy to provide more housing for our low-income neighbors, Sound Transit 3 to help us all get around and I-1491 to authorize extreme protection orders to protect vulnerable people from those who would use guns against them.
