Christmas Events
Roger and Pauline continue to attend various Christmas events in the ward. On Friday they were invited to the Good Neighbours Christmas Party in the Baptist Church off Quinton Park, along with a fellow councillor. However all three were “ambushed” and had to “sing for their supper” with all 12 choruses of the '12 Days of Christmas'. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves in spite of our singing and the food was as excellent as ever.

Afterwards Roger and Pauline visited the Christmas Fair at Howes Primary School. Despite what our pictures show, this event was very well attended by parents and very excited pupils. Hopefully a lot of money was raised for their school funds.

On Saturday we were back at Quinton Park Baptist Church where we stepped into Christmas with the ‘Step Up Singers’. The hall was totally packed and we were all entertained by some very talented singers who’d only had six weeks of rehearsals for most of the programme. They certainly outshone us with their rendering of the ‘12 Days of Christmas’. The group meets at the hall on a Friday afternoon and are always looking to encourage more singers of any age. For more details visit their facebook page

John Grace Street Parking Petition
Roger met some of the residents of John Grace Street last week, to explain how the residents parking scheme in Cheylesmore works and to answer their queries in regards to the scheme.

After handing in their petition, he has received the formal confirmation that the petition from John Grace Street has been registered with Coventry City Council.

New Tiverton School Update
From the "New Tiverton Delivery Team" for Coventry City Council which consists of Council Officers, the designers and also the builders:

Weekly update: Friday 9th December 2016
Farrans and their subcontractors have had a good week stripping out all the insides of the former Alice Steven’s school building.  The main shell will be taken down in January. We would like to remind the community that building sites are dangerous places and request that people stay away.

Additional security will be in place over the Christmas holidays.

The tree protection measures have been agreed and these will be monitored throughout the project.

Whitley Common South
Last week, Roger attended a meeting with our “local resident champion” Hazel Hill and Coventry City Council office Nigel Clews, in regards to the fields between Leaf Lane and the Whitley bypass - Whitley Common South. The council has already started mowing the grass to give better access for people who want to walk there. A commitment was made to improve access from Leaf Lane to the common, as money allows. Over 8 years ago there was a 106 agreement with money for this area which might be able to be used, but the amounts are very small. Signage and rubbish bins were also discussed.

Cheylesmore Library Volunteers
Last week’s volunteers’ meeting was again well attended and we welcomed 4 more people to our group. Library Services informed us that the cabinet meeting to discuss the results from the library consultations may now take place in March instead of February.
.
We’ve now had 26 people express an interest in volunteering to enable the library to be kept open. The next volunteers meeting is on Monday 23rd January at 3pm

If you are interested in volunteering to help keep the library open then please email: cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.
The more volunteers that we have then the longer the opening hours can be.

Mistletoe Sales
From Ann Wilson, Coventry Tree Wardens
Coventry Tree Wardens have once again been cutting the mistletoe from trees in Cheylesmore. We have now had 2 sessions cutting the mistletoe and may do one more next week. The trees are looking a bit lighter, but still some left. We are surprised after all we took off last year.

The mistletoe will be offered for donations to the Lord Mayor's Charities in the Upper Precinct on:
Wednesday 14th December from 6pm till 8pm
Saturday 17th December from 10am until we run out.

This year's charities are the Alzheimer's Society and Cancer Research through the Medical Research Department at the University of Warwick.
Please come and support us.

PS. One evening in town and selling to a few florists has already raised £400 for the Lord Mayor's charity appeal.

Thank you Cheylesmore!

Porlock Close Trees
Hazel Hill continues to work tirelessly for her area and keeps everyone on their toes! This week she reported the following success to Roger.
Hello Sam,
Workmen are currently trimming one of the trees at the bottom of Porlock Close. They say they only have an order for the one tree. The other tree carries a loose branch in its canopy which I reported months ago as you know. Could urgent instructions be given for this to be removed today please?  Hazel

Dear All
Thank you very much. The branch has been removed this afternoon. Hazel

As you will be aware, permission was granted for us to consult with the public about a potential Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for the City Centre. It is intended to address a number of different issues that have been identified as potentially having a negative influence on the City Centre and if granted the order should assist us in managing those matters. This consultation closes January 15th 2017.

Please could you circulate details of the consultation process as we’re keen to get the views of as many people as possible.
